Primary Bedroom Walk-in Closet Design Plans & Mood Board

Sharing our design plans to create a character-filled primary walk-in closet.

With the drywall officially finished up, I’m thinking things will move along a little faster for us through this second floor renovation of ours, which means I better get my butt moving on finalizing the design plans for each of these spaces. While we finalized plans for our ensuite bath months ago, I’ve been struggling to commit to many design decisions throughout our primary bedroom and closet. I shared some ideas for our primary bedroom a few weeks ago and, while I have yet to order anything, I am feeling more sure about my furniture and decor pieces for that space at least (see my final mood board for our bedroom here). Before I pulled the trigger on ordering anything, I wanted to make sure my choices would work with the design for our primary closet – obviously each of the spaces in our primary suite need to feel connected through their design. While I had some general design ideas for our closet, today, I wanted to pull together some more definite plans for our closet. Let’s do this friends!

Primary Bedroom Walk-In Closet Design

So, there were a few elements within this space that I’d already decided on – mainly, the wood flooring, the wallpaper and the idea of a dresser tucked into the window nook. The window nook measures 61.5″ wide, so I found myself on the hunt for a dresser that would be just slightly smaller than that so that it could tuck into that little alcove without leaving too much wasted space on either side. This beautiful dresser not only fit the bill size-wise, but I love the bit of contrast the darker colour will bring.

We’ll be covering the wall behind the dresser in wallpaper, running it all the way around that window nook and onto the wall with the doors to our bedroom as well. The other two walls will be fully covered by our closet cabinets- we’ll be going with the IKEA Pax system, but I’m planning to build it out to create more of a custom, built-in look (read more about that here). We’ll paint it all out in a warm beige colour (right now I’m torn between this colour and this colour) and add some classic brass knobs to all of the drawers.

I’m also still feeling a bit torn about the paint colour for the ceiling and trim throughout the space. I could match it to the built-in cabinets, or I could go with something a bit lighter like this or this (I’ll match it to whichever one of these I use in our bedroom).

On the wall with the doors we’d planned to add some hooks (our equivalent to draping clothes over benches or chairs) and, rather than adding a ton of individual hooks I thought something like this might not only be easier and less expensive to install, but would also add some unique interest too. I also really love the idea of two of these, so still a little stuck on this element.

Finally, I’ve already ordered up this light (in the ORB finish) for the ceiling. I really debated about going with brass, but in the end I decided I wanted to change things up from the brass lights all around our bedroom, including the sconces flanking the doors to our closet.

Whew! I think I’ve covered everything here. Who knew there’d be SO much involved with designing a closet?! The further along this renovation journey we get, the more excited I feel to see these spaces come to life! Hoping I’ll have some more progress to share here soon, but in the meantime, keep an eye on my Insta stories for any updates and sneak peeks.

Wishing you SUCH a lovely day!
