Meet the mercers
Hello! Iโm Kristi, writer and creator behind Making it in the Mountains. I am a wife, a mother & a teacher. My husband Brady and I go all the way back to junior high. He works as an engineer through the day, but his true love is renovating (well, and skiing, he really loves skiing). Our son Carson is officially a teenager now (not sure how that happened so quickly). He’s outgoing, charming and so darn funny. He also loves to ski, so when Brady’s not busy renovating, the boys are often taking off to the mountains to hit the slopes together.

As a family, we love to travel to and explore new places. We’re not the really sit by a pool type (though that can be fun for a day too). Instead, we tend to wander, explore and adventure our way through a trip together.

While I’m not much of a skier, skiing is life for my two boys. There’s nothing they love more than heading to the mountains to “shred some pow”!

We renovated our way through our old Black Cedar House before taking on our current Tudor Cottage.
We’re always up for an adventure, especially if it involves mountain biking, hiking, paddle boarding or basically anything outdoors.

Curling up with a good book is my very favourite thing to do.

our design + renovation journey
We started our renovation journey back in 2015 with our very first “fixer upper” and, while it was completely overwhelming not knowing a thing about DIY, design or renovation, we muddled our way through to create a beautiful home for our family.
Through the years, Brady has taught himself how to DIY everything from framing to installing hardwoods and we have yet to come across an idea for a space that he can’t bring to life.
In 2022 we embarked on a new (and completely unexpected adventure), purchasing the house my husband grew up in. This old house has always held a special place in our hearts. Not only is it a beautiful tudor style home, with loads of charm & character, but itโs filled to the brim with happy memories for our family, dating all the way back to 1988!
The house was in pretty rough shape, but we are slowly working our way through the never-ending list of projects. We truly are so excited to have the opportunity to bring this character filled home back to life!
thank you so much for stopping by!
