Sharing our design plans to create a character-filled primary bedroom.
This primary bedroom renovation has been in the works for far too long my friends. It’s taken me ages to figure out just what I wanted to do in here, but, after sorting through all sorts of beautiful design ideas and inspiration, I am so excited to finally share our design plans for this space.
Before we dive into our design plans, let’s take a quick peek at the general layout of this space and how it fits in relation to the rest of our second floor. You can find our new primary suite situated on the left hand side in the floor plan below. There’s a whole story of how this space came to be here if you’re curious.
After redesigning this entire space, including moving walls, reworking lighting and even adding an arched opening, we’re currently in the process of adding drywall over all of the new framing and then we’ll finally be ready for the fun part – paint, flooring, furniture and decor! Here’s how our primary bedroom looks today…
And now, let me tell you all about what we plan to do in here!
Design Plans for a Character-Filled Primary Bedroom
Now that you’ve seen the mood board, let me tell you all about how I plan to put this all together. Let’s start with that little hallway into our bedroom. I really wanted the entrance to this bedroom to feel extra special, so we designed and built an arched opening to create a small hallway that leads into our main bedroom space. As you can see in the construction photo above, it’s not much of a hallway really, but it’s just enough to create the feeling of a separate little entrance space. In this hallway, I’m planning to line the walls with box trim from floor to ceiling, adding a chair rail down the middle (similar to this). Down the hallway, directly across from the main bedroom, we’ll be adding double doors leading into our new walk-in closet. On either side of the closet doors, I’m planning to add a sconce (something like this is what I have in mind here). Finally, at the end of the hallway, I’d love to place a big floor mirror – I love that this one mimics the arched opening.
Walking into the main bedroom space, I’m thinking I’ll continue the chair rail and box trim underneath all around the main bedroom. I’m dying to bring in a slipcovered bed like this one – I just love the cottage feel a cozy, slipcovered bed brings. To keep things interesting and not too, tone-on-tone, I’d love to add a pop of black with some nightstands like this and a bench for the end of the bed. Some modern lamps on either side of the bed will help to balance out all of the more traditional elements. I’m planning to ground it all with a cozy rug, though I’m not sure if I want to go with something neutral like this or something that has a bit more pattern and colour to it. What do you think?
To the left of the bed will be our ensuite bathroom. The only lighting for our bedroom, aside from the two sconces beside our closet doors will be two more sconces, each flanking our bathroom door – planning to use these same sconces there I think too. To the right of our bed, is basically a wall of windows, with a big window bench in front. Planning to add a cozy cushion to the window bench and some dark linen curtains over it all.
I’d love to introduce lots of different patterns and textures into our bedroom – between the bedding, throw pillows and window bench area, there’ll be tons of opportunity to mix and match lots of texture, pattern and colour in this space.
I’m sure it’s no surprise that we’ll also be running new flooring throughout the entire space (and the rest of our second floor). After humming and hawing for months over whether we should go with lighter or darker toned hardwood floors (see my inspiration for both here), we’ve finally landed on these – not too dark, not too light, a happy middle ground I’d say.
Well friends, I think that about covers it. After more than a year of planning, I can’t tell you how excited I am to see this space finally start coming together!
Wishing you SUCH a lovely day!
