Talking through all of my design ideas as I plan out our primary bedroom.
Primary Bedroom Design Ideas
Flooring:
I’ve been struggling with this one for since we moved into this old house (you can read more about that here). While I know I’d like to add some engineered hardwood in here, I can’t seem to find the perfect mid-toned shade that I’ve been picturing in my head. Everything feels too light, too dark, too green or orange or grey. I’m planning to head back into the city on a floor shopping mission this week, here’s hoping I can finally find what I’m looking for. Whatever hardwood we do go with in here will also be used throughout the rest of our home as well, so I’m definitely feeling a lot of pressure to get this one right. For reference, here’s what I’m hoping to check out in person:
The Walls:
I know that I want to add some wall paneling around our bedroom space, it’s an easy way to bring in some visual interest without adding too much visual clutter and I love the charm & character it adds. Earlier this week, I shared some different options I’ve been considering. I think I’ve landed on a raised panel trim, but I want to vary the heights a bit. We essentially have two different areas in our bedroom space, which are separated by an arched opening – the main bedroom space and a small hallway that will act almost as a vestibule between our main hallway and our bedroom (this might help you envision it better). Our closet will be located off of this little vestibule hallway too. The arched opening will be built along that beam you can see on our ceiling in the photo below.
I think I’d like to take advantage of this separate little vestibule/hallway space and do something a little different in here. My thoughts at the moment are to do a full height wall paneling treatment through the little hallway vestibule and then continue just the bottom portion to add wainscotting around our main bedroom space. I’ll share some of my inspo images below.
In terms of colour, I think I’m leaning towards a warm white (like image two above) or perhaps a light greige.
I think we’ll also add shiplap to our ceilings through our entire primary suite, including the closet and our ensuite bathroom.
The Lighting:
We don’t actually have an overhead light in our bedroom, but we do have four wall sconces – one on either side of our closet doors and two more flanking our ensuite bathroom door. I rounded up all sorts of beautiful options, but I think we’re leaning towards using these ones – I love the aged brass look and they’re not too crazy expensive.
The Window Coverings:
We’re going to run curtains across the entire wall of windows, just one straight line over the window bench. There is also a window beside the bed, which I think I’ll cover with a roman shade that matches the curtains.
The Furniture:
We’ll be purchasing all new furniture for this space, mainly because we’ll be downsizing from a King bed to a Queen (if I can talk Brady into it anyway, I’m still working on it). While we could fit a King bed in here, it would be tight. I’d much prefer the space that a Queen sized bed would leave on either side, it would allow us to bring in some larger nightstands. I haven’t sourced any furniture for this space yet, but I’ll link up a few pieces I’ve had my eye on for you below:
Well, there you have it friends. A little glimpse into the chaos that has been spinning around my head lately. Honestly, I’m not sure whether I’ve found my groove again or maybe there’s just so much less to choose in here, but this space is coming together so much more easily than any other has in this old house of ours. Here’s hoping I’ve got a mood board to share with you soon!
Wishing you SUCH a lovely day!
