Design Ideas for our Primary Walk-in Closet
Walking through all of my design ideas as I plan out our primary walk-in closet.

We’ve been hard at work around here with the renovations on our second floor these past few months – including our primary bedroom, ensuite bath, walk-in closet and Carson’s new bedroom. It’s been a BIG undertaking to say the least and, after over a year of planning out all the things, I can’t tell you how exciting it is to finally see these spaces that we’ve been dreaming up for so long start coming to life. We’ve finalized the design plans for our ensuite and already have most of the materials on hand. I’ve also got the general design for our primary bedroom all figured out (check it out here), though I’m still waffling on the exact furniture and decor, so, aside from flooring and trim, we haven’t ordered up much for the bedroom just yet. While I mull over the specifics of that design, I’ve been plugging away at some plans for our new walk-in closet – thankfully, the vision for our closet has been much easier to pull together. After feeling stuck in decision paralysis with this reno for far too long, I’m happy to run with what I know for now. Here’s what I’m thinking in terms of design for our closet…
Primary Walk-in Closet Design Ideas
FLOORING:
We’ve ordered up this mid-toned hardwood for our entire second floor. It’s a really good quality floor with a ton of character and is made here in Canada, which we really love. The hardwood will run through the hallway and all of the bedroom spaces on our second floor, including the closets.
I’d also love to bring a rug into our closet as well – I haven’t really narrowed down my options here yet, but I think something like this would look beautiful.
DOORS + TRIM:
We’re planning to swap out all of the doors throughout the house – as we replace the flooring, we’ll swap out the doors and trim in each space as well. I think we’ve landed on this classic style in a solid core. Still not sure on a colour, but I’m thinking I’ll likely pull in whatever colour I’m using in the bedroom.

WALLS:
Two of the walls will be covered from floor to ceiling by shelving, but I’m planning to make the most of the two walls that are left in here. We’re going to use the same wall paper from our ensuite to wallpaper the wall with the window box as well as the wall with the double doors leading to our bedroom. Ever since laying eyes on the gorgeous space pictured below, I haven’t been able to get this wallpaper out of my head and I cannot wait to see in our closet and ensuite!

LIGHTING:
Though there are three windows to keep things nice and bright in there through the day, we’ve got one little overhead light in this space to light things up at night, which means I’m going to have to make sure I choose something that can shine enough light around the space (ie. something with a translucent shade and more than one light bulb). I’d love to find something with a vintage feel like this one.
CLOSET SYSTEM:
I’m pretty sure we’re going to go with an IKEA Pax system in here – I just love all of the options for organization. I’ve been playing around with different designs and I think we’re going to go with something like this:

I am planning to customize it by adding some trim, custom drawer fronts and painting it all out, likely in a deep taupe colour like Briarwood from Benjamin Moore (it’s the same colour we used on the trim in our mudroom). I’ve been pinning all sorts of DIY IKEA closet hacks (see them all here), but I’m picturing trying something like this – I mean you’d never know this beautiful closet started with some simple closet boxes from IKEA.

DRESSER:
We’d like to tuck a dresser into the little window alcove. While it’s currently a lovely little window bench, I think a dresser would be much more useful for us in here (plus, we’ll have a nice big window bench in the bedroom). We’re currently debating whether we want to go with something that will tie into our bedroom furniture (this one and this one are at the top of my list and would fit perfectly in that little alcove) or, maybe have something custom built. We’ve sent off some drawings for a built-in design to our cabinet maker (along with some plans for a new window bench in the bedroom), so I guess we’ll see where we land in terms of cost and whether it seems like a reasonable option for us.

WINDOW COVERINGS:
I think we’re going to stick with our much loved smart shades. We’ve used these smart shades through our main living spaces so far and just love the convenience of them! Since most of our bedroom and closet windows face south, it’s nice to have a smart option that can come down automatically on a schedule to help keep the heat of the sun out through the summer. Plus, who doesn’t love window coverings that operate with the touch of a button?! If you’re curious about some of the smart home features we’ve worked into our home, you can catch up with them all here.
Well, there you have it friends. A little glimpse into the chaos that has been spinning around my head lately. Hereโs hoping Iโve got a mood board to share with you soon!
Wishing you SUCH a lovely day!
