Oh my goodness…
Just typing this post is making me bubble over with excitement, anxiety and everything in between.
I suppose this makes things official…
Making it in the Mountains is signing on for another One Room Challenge my friends!
What’s the ORC you ask? Basically, I’m pledging to completely makeover one room in our home in just six weeks.
This will be our third ORC – yes, you read that right – THIRD.
Without knowing quite what I was getting us into, I took part in our first ORC when we created this rustic cabin themed retreat for our little man.
Then, we took on our own bedroom, creating this lovely farmhouse style master bedroom last Fall.
The One Room Challenge is not for the faint of heart my friends! It’s one of the most difficult and exhausting journeys I’ve ever had to walk (twice), every moment of which certainly lives up to it’s name.
So, why then would I make the choice to inflict this torture on myself and my family a third time? Well, aside from the fact that I’m clearly mad, there’s really nothing so motivating to me as a challenge. I love to run 1/2 marathons (currently working up the courage to take on a full someday), hurl down mountains on a bike, and really, what’s more challenging than parenting a toddler?!
With great challenge, comes great reward.
There’s nothing like proving to yourself (and the world) just how capable you really are!
Thankfully, my husband agrees. Or I’d really be in quite a pickle right now.
You see, as if making over an entire room wasn’t enough – we’re planning a complete and total gut job. *Key word here is planning my friends, because there’s a very real chance we’re completely overshooting our skill set and timeline on this one.
I’m talking electrical, plumbing, drywalling, tiling (any ideas about where I’m going with this?) – all of which neither one of us has ever attempted before.
You guessed it friends, we’re officially signing on to renovate our main bathroom and we’re officially the craziest folks ever for doing it.
Seriously, what are we thinking? You can bet I’ve asked myself this more than a few times as we started planning all of this.
But, here’s the thing I keep coming back to – this One Room Challenge is overflowing with support from so many other people just as nutso as we are. It’s an incredible feeling to not only make it through this challenge alive, but to have another room in our home completely and totally finished. Not to mention, we’ve got some AHHHHHHMAZING brands we’ve partnered with to create a design so gorgeous that I have to pinch myself to make sure it’s all real.
But, before I get into all of the wonderful things we have planned for this space, let’s just take a quick peek at what we’re starting with.
Welcome to our lovely bathroom in all of it’s yucky blue 90’s glory.
Let’s start with this toilet that only flushes if you hold the handle down for about 2947876 minutes. And of course, the gorgeous linoleum floor around it.
And how about that ginormous jetted tub, which I’ve never been able to make myself use in the year+ that we’ve lived here. I mean, who really knows what’s in those jets?!
Luckily, Carson didn’t inherit his Mommy’s crazy genes and has been able to enjoy his baths in here at least.
This corner shower also remains unused. I’ve scrubbed this thing within an inch of it’s life (figuratively of course), but it’s still full of rusty spots around the track that just won’t budge (I’ll spare you the photo of those).
It’s also got a pretty wicked patch job, which at the very least, took a whole tube of caulking to fix up.
So, it’s become this scary place that we just shut off from the rest of the house.
There isn’t a single towel holder or toilet roll holder in the room (hence the roll on the back of the old toilet), which means we’ve had to add a few hooks to the back of the door to hold C’s towel.
Thank goodness we’ve got these lovely 80’s style glass shelves to display our extra wash cloths at least.
And of course, the main hub of it all, this perfect little vanity complete with the slowest draining sink ever and caulking that rubs off each time I clean it.
And my very favourite part, the gorgeous light above it all that adds some much needed charm and personality (for the record, I was too cheap to replace that bulb when I knew we’d be changing it soon anyway).
You probably find yourself wondering why I’d ever want to mess with SUCH a good thing.
Well for starters, this self proclaimed germaphobe is desperately missing her baths. I mean what Mama doesn’t wish for a half-hour to herself with a good book and a glass of wine in the bath? #agirlcandream
More than that though, it’s just not a functional space for our family (see all of the whining and complaining above).
So, I bet you’re wondering now what we’ve got planned for the space. Well my friends, for that you’ll just have to wait until next week.
Unless…
You may want to pop on over to our ItSums board for a peek at our budget for this project as well as pictures and links to all of the products we’re planning on using. Y’all know how much I love this brilliant tool for keeping track of our renovation costs and plans – we’ve put it to work, creating a separate board for each room renovation in our house so far and it’s been such a HUGE help in keeping everything on track and all in one place (you can read more about it here)!
This bathroom remodel is going to be one crazy, wonderful, exhausting overwhelming, beautiful ride … are you ready?
Be sure to follow along with us on Instagram for all sorts of updates and sneak peeks!
Now, you’re going to want to pop over to the One Room Challenge page to check out all of the other incredible room makeovers that are just kicking off too!
*UPDATE*

When we gutted and redid our bathroom I foolishly thought it would only take a weekend or two, so you’re way ahead of the game haha 🙂 I’m interested to see how you update those 80s glass shelves / cubby space – it could be a really good storage area!
Thank you Nicole! Things are chugging along slowly so far, but I’m hoping that once we’ve finished with everything behind the walls, things can start moving a little more quickly. To be honest, I still haven’t decided what exactly we’ll be doing with the cubby area, though I do know we have to keep it as there’s a heating duct running beside it, which is why it was there in the first place. Thanks so much!
Can’t wait to see, looks like it’s going to beautiful! Love the first two rooms!!
Thank you so, so much April!!!
I know you’re going to transform this bathroom into something gorgeous! We just got rid of a pair of similar crappy light fixtures in our master bath, and it felt SO good.
Thank you so, so much Emily!!! I can’t wait to see it come out too!
I know your quality in remodeling and decorating is always on point so this is going to be spectacular! Can wait to see it. I have two bathrooms to remodel (someday) so I just know you will give great inspiration!
Awwww, you are super sweet! Thank you so much Rachel! Here’s hoping we can pull it all together in time. 😉
Bathrooms are a huge undertaking, but I have faith you can totally do this! You have had such stunning spaces for your last couple ORCs, I’m sure this will be no exception. Good luck!
WOW Kristi – this is a big undertaking, but y’all have proved that you’ve got what it takes to get the job done! We can’t wait to follow along and see how you progress. We are participating for the first time…and our rookie-selves have already had some stumbling blocks LOL. Best wishes!
Thank you so, so much ladies! Totally losing our minds over here, but y’all are going to rock this!!!
Can’t wait to follow along with your bathroom remodel Kristi! I am sure it’s going to be amazing:)
Thank you SO, SO much Tara!!!
Somehow I missed this intro so I came back to it after reading this week’s update! I’m so excited to see how this turns out.
Awwww, well thanks girl!
Along about now, you must be about halfway through and exhausted! But stay strong and keep focused! I’m sure you are going to make a wonderful “getaway” for yourself and your family. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Thank you so, so much Debbie! We’re more than halfway through the timeline as I write this today, and I wish we could say that we’re more than halfway through the work that needs to be done. I’m beginning to think we might not get it all finished up in time, but we’re certainly giving it our all. Thanks again!!!
