A Rustic Boy’s Bedroom
Well, hello my friends!
It’s a beautiful day for room reveal, don’t ya think?
My first ever actually!
And I’ve just gotta say, it feels pretty darn great to have one whole room in our new home totally and completely FINISHED! Especially considering the entire house is quite literally begging to go next! Okay, maybe not literally, but you get the idea.
I’ve never really taken on an entire room before. And let me tell you – it was a journey of epic proportions! Who knew something could be so overwhelming, exciting, daunting and exhilarating, all at the same time?!
Maybe it’s all just the price you pay of taking on an entire room all at once. Or maybe, just maybe, our tight timeline played a small part in the roller coaster ride that was making over our son’s bedroom.
You may remember our commitment to join the One Room Challenge six short weeks ago. Not only did we pledge to transform an entire room in our home, but we agreed to do it in just SIX WEEKS (I guess that’s where the challenge part comes in)! If I’m being honest, I don’t think there was ever a moment that I didn’t question whether we’d be able to actually do this! Thank goodness my excitement about finally getting this room done overshadowed my worry about what I’d gotten myself into (most of the time anyway)!
Here’s a quick re-cap of how things progressed over these last six weeks if you need to catch up:
Week One: Design Plan
Week Two: Progress Makes Perfect
Week Three: Challenges, Setbacks & Our Most Unproductive Week
Week Four: Getting Organized
Week Five: Almost There
Okay, enough chit-chat my friends, I’m absolutely dying to share Carson’s new rustic, cabin-themed Big Boy Bedroom with y’all today! A word of warning, to avoid information overload, I’m going to hold off on sharing any sources until next week, but if you’re absolutely dying to know where I found something, feel free to check out my Itsums Big Boy Bedroom board for all of the product details and a look at how everything fit into our budget. Now, let’s get on with the show, shall we?
Here we go…
Welcome to our little cabin in the forest!
Nothing says old, rustic cabin like a ton of wood and plaid, am I right?
I’m so excited that we finally got to hang Carson’s growth chart after having it all packed up for almost a year!
There is one task we didn’t quite get to within our tight six week timeline – replacing that awful door hardware, though that’s still on the agenda for the entire house. Considering every surface in this entire room was changed (including the carpet, which we had installed just before moving into our new home), I’m okay with it … for now.
Aren’t these little moose hooks just the sweetest? With a coat of Country Chic Chalk Paint in Rustic Charm, these little guys will be the perfect spot for C to hang his sweaters and hats!
And thank goodness we did get around to changing out those old closet doors!
I’m thrilled to finally see my DIY Crate Table find it’s home!
And I added this fun little cardboard moose above it to help balance it out with the bigger side table on the other side of the bed.
I’m absolutely crazy about the fun bedding we found to pull everything together!
There’s really no doubt that this ahhhhmazing plank wall totally makes the room! Brady did SUCH a great job putting it up (find the full tutorial here)! The most exciting part is that perfectly weathered gray colour I was able to achieve using the most amazing reactive stain from Weatherwood Stains! You can read all about the easiest way to weather wood here.
What do y’all think of that headboard? Would you believe that hubs and I made it? I cannot wait to share the details of that adventure soon! *Update: Find the tutorial here*
And how perfect is this stuffed stag? Carson tells him all sorts of stories as he lays under him at bedtime each night!
Now, what Canadian cabin would be complete without an old wool Hudson’s Bay Blanket?! This just might be one of my very favorite finds for the room!
This IKEA shelf was another quick DIY that has totally stolen my heart! I want to make one for every room in our home now!!! Details coming soon!!! *Update: Find the tutorial here*
I’m still head-over-heels in love with his bookshelf! We had it custom made for Carson when he was just a baby along with the gorgeous dresser beside it! And that lovely Denver print on top was courtesy of Albie Designs through a giveaway on one of my very fave blogs, Blue I Style. Isn’t it perfect?! PS. Everybody always says this, but I never, ever win anything so this really felt like it was meant to be!
I had hoped to make a rustic laundry basket, but when I came across this fab garbage can at IKEA, I just couldn’t pass it up!
A few pictures, some awesome antique finds and some DIY Pallet Art were easy ways to add some pops of colour to the space. I can’t wait to show you how easy it was to create that fun art!!!
And who could forget this light?! It honestly couldn’t be more perfect for the space! Would you have guessed that it’s actually meant to go outdoors?!
Another fab DIY courtesy of my handy husband – this rustic valance was the perfect way to dress up a simple gray blackout roller blind.
And I’ve gotta say, I’m pretty pumped that I found a way to work this little bench into the space. My Mom picked it up for C a couple of years ago, but it’s hideous colours had me hiding it out of sight. With just a lick of my trusty chalk paint, I had it looking polished and new in no time!
Whew!
I still can’t believe we were able to pull this off! Here’s a quick re-cap of where we started and everything we did to transform this space into this rustic, cabin-themed bedroom for our little man:
– paint walls with Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl
– replace closet doors
– paint doors trim work with Benjamin Moore’s Paper Mache
– replace door and closet hardware
– DIY plank wall
– add light fixture
– blackout blind
– make DIY window valance (twice!)
– make DIY bedside table (sharing details soon!)
– paint DIY crate table
– make DIY headboard
– find & purchase accessories
– make (or buy) laundry basket
– make artwork
– create reading nook
This really was one heck of a journey, but I’m so happy with what we were able to accomplish in just six weeks! There’s something pretty great about completely transforming a room from top to bottom and actually having a whole room FINISHED, just the way you’ve always pictured it in your head.
It’ll be SO special for Carson to have his own fun space in our new home (you can take the tour here)!
If you’re as happy with this Rustic Boy’s Bedroom as we are, I would absolutely love for you to Pin It:
Thank you SO much to Linda at Calling It Home for hosting this fab challenge! And of course, to everyone following along and sharing encouragement exactly when I needed to hear it most! Sending all my love right back at ya!
Wishing you SUCH a lovely day!
