Yes, you read that right … welcome to Week Three of our One Room Challenge! Can you believe we’re officially halfway through this crazy (seriously!) journey?! YIKES!
Let’s just recap what exactly I’ve gotten myself into, shall we? Three weeks ago, I committed to making a Rustic Big Boy Bedroom for our not-so-little guy in just six weeks?! Have I mentioned that every single surface from floors to ceiling and everything in between had to change? Yup. This gal just might have bitten off more than she can chew (in six weeks anyway). In Week One, I shared our plans for the room and Week Two was all about progress my friends.
Then came Week Three, which unfortunately brought that nasty flu back to the Mercer house. Specifically the Mercer that’s in charge of it all. You may remember that my husband and son came down with the flu through Week Two, yet somehow things (a lot of things) still got done. Mommy gets the flu and the whole house (and everyone in it) fall apart. Okay, perhaps, just maaaaaybe, I’m exaggerating a little. I’m not being entirely fair to Brady, who was a HUGE help with Carson while I was laid up on the couch (for the few hours that I got to be laid up on the couch, cause let’s face it, Mommy sick is different than toddler sick, or Daddy sick). Anyway, somehow, however miraculously, we all survived The Great Flu Wipe-out of 2015, though it certainly cost us some productivity this week.
So, what did we accomplish this week? Well, the plank wall is up. It may not be stained, it may not have baseboards. But, it’s up! Thanks to my hard working hubs, we have two walls full, floor to ceiling (yes, two – you weren’t expecting that, were you?) with lovely pine planks in all their glory!
Remember this sneak peek?
And here’s how things look today!
I haven’t officially crossed it off of our list though, considering it’s still waiting for some stain. And not just any old stain my friends – on it’s way to our home at this very moment is THE MOST perfectly weathered stain from Weatherwood Stains! Eeeeek! And I’m SO excited to try it!!!
While having the flu isn’t exactly how I’d hoped to spend my weekend, it did give me a great chance to get a ton of shopping done. Curious to see what I’ve been buying? You can find all the details on my Itsums board, which not only keeps track of all of my fab finds, but even lets me mark them as “purchased” and keeps track of my budget. Brilliant, right?! It’s seriously been the best tool ever to keep track of everything reno related and I can’t wait to put it to work as we plan out each room reno in our home (you can read more about how it all works here)! You’ll have to hop on over to see where I’ve been shopping, what it’s all costing us and of course, whether I’ve managed to stay on budget!
So, without actually crossing a single thing from our list this week, I’ll just remind you what we’ve got left to do:
– paint walls with Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl
– replace closet doors
– paint doors trim work with Benjamin Moore’s Paper Mache
– replace door and closet hardware
– DIY plank wall
– add light fixture
– blackout blind
– make DIY window valance
– make DIY bedside table
– paint DIY crate table
– make DIY headboard
– find & purchase accessories
– make (or buy) laundry basket
– make artwork
– create reading nook
Ummmm, is anybody else completely terrified that we’ve got just three weeks left to get it all done?
Below, you can find links to all of the DIY projects made for this Rustic Boy’s Bedroom as well as a source list. I’ll be sure to update this list as new tutorials are posted:
Oh Kristi, I am loving that plank wall! Can’t wait to see it stained! And when I saw your title, I totally felt better! Our week was soo unproductive but we’ll rock this next week, won’t we? 😉 Have a great day tomorrow and hope you’re all feeling better! xo
I have to idea how I linked the word rock to HD! It did that all on it’s own!
Yes, it’s an affiliate program I have installed that creates links wherever it can – still not too sure about it.
Awwww, thanks Kendra! I thought the same thing when I read your post! Happy to hear we’re not alone!!! xo
That plank wall!! My husband wants to do this so bad in our home!! Am-aze-ing!!! It will be a jaw dropping room once it’s done! Can’t wait. I feel like weeks fly by so fast and we are almost at the finish line…ghaw! Lot more to do! Let’s do this girl!!XXOO
Awwww, thanks Aniko! We are SO happy with how it’s turned out! Can you believe we’ve got just three weeks left?! YIKES!
Wow! Can’t wait to see that wall stained. And really like that you did the wall at the end of the closet. Hope the flu has run it’s course and you are all on the road to recovery.
Thanks SO much Peggy! Man, I hope so too!!! I’m thrilled that you love it and I can’t wait to share it all stained up soon!
Yay! Glad to hear that you are on the mend. That room looks so good already… can’t wait to see it in another 3 weeks!
Thanks SO much Ashley! I’m dying to see how it all turns out (and if we can manage to get it all done!) too!
First off, the plank wall looks AMAZING! Secondly, when reading your week 2 about the flu I immediately felt doomsday was coming for you! Ugh, the flu always works that way! So sorry to hear but hey at least you got some shopping done!
Awwww, I knew it was coming too Jennifer. SUCH a bummer! But yes, shopping helped to ease the pain just a bit! Can’t wait to check out your playroom now!
The plank walls look fantastic! I can’t wait to see it stained! Glad you are feeling better!

Thanks SO much Shonee!!! I’m dying to see how it looks all stained now!!!
The wall looks amazing!
Thanks SO much Katy! I’m thrilled with how it turned out! Now to get it all stained!
Your post title absolutely cracked me up! The plank wall is fantastic and looks great even unfinished. I’m in your shoes and have hit a wall…chandelier is on back order, no time to build a bench, replacement chair still hasn’t been shipped….blah blah blah. Progress is progress though, no matter how small. Your little guy’s room looks great even if you’re not as far along as you’d like.
Awwwww, thank you SO much for your super sweet words Teresa!!! I’m so sorry you’re feeling so far behind too! I guess that’s the nature of the “challenge”. Here’s hoping it all comes together for us both girl!!!
Kristi, the walls look amazing!!! It’ll all come together and look fabulous!! You totally have this!!
Looking so good! Love your plank wall and can’t wait to see the weathered finish! He’s one lucky boy. That’s a nice sized room!
Thanks Leslie! It is a pretty big room! He’ll have a ton of room to spread out and play, that’s for sure!
Aw I hope you’re feeling better Kristi!! Totally not good timing for the dumb flu. That plank wall is going to be AMAZING!
You’re right – stupid flu! But, I suppose there’s never really a good time. Thanks girl!!!
Girl, I’m jealous your walls are (mostly) planked already! They look awesome!!!
Hope you feel better soon. Ain’t nobody got time for that!;)
Awwwww, thanks Jenna!!! I’m glad we at least made it through the planking, now just a bit of staining (and a laundry list of other jobs too of course!) left.
The planked walls look so amazing! Hope your household recovers from the flu… And maybe next week will be your most productive week!
Thanks so much Kevin!!! I’m sure hoping we’re done with that awful flu! Here’s to a very productive Week Four!!!
Yes – you are NOT at all alone in the terror, but I’ll get done, and you’ll get done and we’ll all have fabulous new spaces. It’s the magic of the ORC! I can’t wait to see the weathered stain – it sounds amazing.
Awwww, thanks Melissa! It feels so much more do-able knowing you’re not in it alone! Good luck girl!!! Here’s to a very productive Week Four!
The wall looks beautiful! Sorry you all had to go through the flu though, that is no fun! Glad you’re all on the mend & ready for week 4.
Awww, well thank you Erin! It’s definitely not fun to be sick, especially with a deadline looming over your head and a toddler begging you to play with some serious puppy dog eyes 😉 Definitely ready for Week Four!
Kristi, I’m finally playing catch up in your ORC and wow I am amazed that a. you had the flu and carried on b. this planked wall is stunning! It’s going to look gorgeous with the white weathered stain! I’ve been all over the place and every time I do ORC it’s at the craziest times, but at the end of it we all have a finished room and teammates cheering us on! Let’s do this!
Awwww, thank you SO much Sarah!!! It has been absolutely mad around here and though I’m sure there’s never really a great time to get sick, this timing was extra stressful! Happy we’re all healthy again and ready to tackle the rest of this room!
SO horrified that we are already halfway finished! It didn’t even feel like I had much to do but it’s all somehow morphing and changing and i don’t have the flu to blame on my lack of progress. That’s plank wall is very impressive though!
Thanks Corinna! Unfortunately, we had another unproductive weekend and I’m beginning to think this room might never get done! Glad to hear I’m not the only one feeling the crunch though!
That plank wall already kicks butt, can’t wait to see it with the stain! And I hope you’re feeling a whole lot better!
Thank you Cat! I’m feeling much better and ready to get back to work!
Hope you’re feeling better! That is so impressive that you got all that done with all that flu! Go girl! The walls look amazing!
Awwww, thanks Kristen! I wish I could take all of the credit, but my hubs has been an amazing help! Can’t wait to see it all stained!!!
This looks amazing! Can’t wait to see what it looks like completely finished!
Awww, thank you Lauren! Here’s hoping we can get there 😉
Glad you’re feeling better. This looks so good already and can’t wait to see it all stained!
Awww, thank you SO much Erlene! Here’s hoping we can get it done soooooon!
The plank wall looks amazing. I can’t wait to see it stained. Sorry, y’all had to go through the flu. Mommy being sick is the hardest. Thanks for sharing at The Creative Circle.

Thanks SO much Jessica! I’m so in love with it and cannot wait to see how it looks with that Weatherwood Stain!
I love your honesty about what you were and weren’t able to accomplish. When family gets sick, everything has to slow down. The wall looks amazing! I can’t wait to see what it will be like when it’s all done. Thanks for linking up to the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party. I have pinned your post to the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Board.
Thanks Janine! It was a tough week, but we made it through and I’m ready to knock a ton off that list this week!
Glad you’re all better now. That wall is amazing! Looking forward to the finished project. We are so glad you shared with us at Merry Monday. I hope to see you at the new party beginning tonight at 9pm EST.
Thanks SO much Shirley! All linked up again this week!
We’re looking at doing a plank wall, and I was wondering, what did you use for the planks? Tongue in groove board or something else? Thanks for sharing this room–enjoyed the reveal!
Thank you SO much Rachel! We used tongue and groove pine to make ours – you can see the full tutorial here if you’d like: https://www.makingitinthemountains.com/how-to-install-a-diy-plank-wall/ 🙂
