Sharing the easiest way to make your own DIY knit blanket.

This is one of those posts I’ve been meaning to share for ages (which seems to be happening more + more these days). I mentioned it a few weeks ago in one of my Weekend Reading roundups and I’ve had a ton of comments and messages about it ever since. I’m not sure if it’s the cozy, rich textures or the just the pretty pictures, but it seems y’all love knitting just as much as I do!
There’s just something about knitting that I’ve always been drawn to – the quaintness + quietness of it, the simplicity, the nostalgia, the coziness – I’ve just always loved the idea of making something so beautiful with just a couple of knitting needles and a few balls of yarn.

Maybe it was the polar vortex we found ourselves stuck in through all of February or maybe it was all of those gorgeous chunky knit blankets I’d seen swirling around Pinterest – whatever the reason, I found myself looking for a cozy knitting project to take on.

But planning out a knitting project can feel a tad overwhelming when you don’t really have the first clue of how to do it.
And so, when you come across some knitting inspiration that’s not only beautiful, but is already planned out and packaged up into a nice, neat little kit – well, you order it up because really, you’d be crazy not to!

And when it arrives at your house just a few days later, you curl up on the couch with a nice cup of tea, you’re handy little kit of supplies and a few YouTube tutorials to get you started.
Now, I’m certainly no pro when it comes to knitting. My sweet Gram taught me all the basics as a teenager, but in the many years since I’d picked up a a pair of knitting needles, I’d forgotten most of what I’d learned. Though this kit arrived with everything I’d need to knit up this gorgeous chunky throw blanket – including all the supplies and the pattern instructions, I did have to look up a few how-to videos along the way (I guess that’s what happens when you wait years between knitting projects!).
I started with this cable cast-on and then followed the simple seed-stitch pattern. Because the pattern repeats with each row through the entire blanket, I found myself working my way through ball after ball of yarn quite quickly (here’s a great tutorial for joining a new ball of yarn) and it wasn’t long before I looked down an realized I could actually see my own beautiful knit blanket taking shape!

And soon, I was hunting down a tutorial to bind off my yarn and weave in each end to finish up my biggest (yet somehow easiest) knitting project yet!

I still can’t believe how quickly this blanket came together and how truly simple it was to create!

Purchasing everything as a tidy little kit, made it so much easier to create my own DIY knit blanket without all the guesswork and planning along the way.

I’m really so proud of how this knitting project, my biggest ever by the way, turned out! And I’m already on the search for my next!

How pretty! I love kits for quilting….they let you get right to the fun part!
Thank you! Yes! I love it when the guesswork is all done for you!
Well! This is beautiful! Now Iโm inspired to knit again!
Thank you! That’s how I always feel when I see a pretty project like this too!
I would love to have one of these blankets but I do not knit. I think it is so much prettier than those ones that have been so popular lately. Honest reviews are saying….they are not all that great. Yours, however, is a close weave with wool thread and looks so warm. I love yours and think it is so beautiful!
Thank you so much Nancy! I know just what you mean – I loved that this was a fluffy, big knit, but still a closer knit as you say, so there aren’t any big holes or gaps in the blanket. I’m really so happy with how it turned out!
Love it! But, I couldn’t find any info regarding the size of the finished blanket using the kit. What were the measurements for hours when completed?
Thanks Annie! The finished blanket measures approximately 49 inches square. Hope this helps!
What pattern did you use?
The pattern was part of a kit, you can find more information about it here: https://www.weareknitters.com/knitting-kit/knitting-levels/easy-level/udon-blanket-xxl?utm_source=CJ&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=cj&utm_content=us&cjevent=5ed1bc4b123e11ec8298f5a90a1c0e12.
