Painting over an old mirror is such a simple and inexpensive way to create a chalkboard with loads of charm and character!
Hello friends!
Welcome to another #MonthlyDIYChallenge! Y’all know how much fun I have teaming up with my talented bloggy friends the first Wednesday of each month to see the different ideas we can come up with from the very same starting point!
This month we’re having some fun with {chalkboards} to bring you all sorts of creative inspiration for your home!
My fellow Fixer-Upper fans have probably come across this beautiful space in your travels…
I fell hard for this simple, but cozy living room the moment I first laid eyes on it.
The soft colours, rustic textures and of course, that pop of green!
So much so that it served as the inspiration to create a bold statement in our own farmhouse style family room.
I love that this schoolhouse green chalkboard wall provides a pop of colour, but somehow it still seems to work as a neutral within the space.
Y’all raved about that green chalkboard wall SO much (THANK YOU!!!), that I couldn’t resist creating a new, smaller version of it…
This pretty number happens to be an old mirror belonging to a vintage dresser set living in our master bedroom (you can check out some before photos here). Though the mirror didn’t quite fit into the vision I had for the space, it was far too lovely to let go of and I just knew I’d find some way to put it to work once again.
After digging it out of the far reaches of our basement, I got straight to work spraying on a couple of coats of the most perfect gold paint around the frame. I didn’t bother taping anything off as I planned to paint right over any paint that happened to land on the mirror.
Once the frame was dry, I painted on a couple of coats of primer over the mirror itself using a small brush to paint around the edge of the frame (I was far too lazy to tape anything!) and this handy mini paint roller for the rest.
Then, I used the same technique to add a couple of coats of this green chalkboard paint to cover the primed mirror.
Though I loved the way the gold and green played off of each other, the combination ended up being a bit more bold than I had anticipated, so I decided to tone the gold down a bit by applying a charcoal coloured glaze around the frame. It was a super simple process that took just a few extra minutes, but made all the difference!
Finally, I finished it all off with a simple chalk scene perfect for those few months of Winter we’ve still got to look forward to.
I’m so, so happy with how it turned out! It’s been the perfect addition to mantel in our family room, bringing a fun pop of colour to the other side of the space now too.
If you’d like to see how the rest of our farmhouse family room came together, you can check out the entire space here…

What a clever idea and smart way to reuse that mirror! You’re right – it was too pretty go be thrown away and I’m so glad it has new life as a chalkboard! Love the green and muted gold combo – it’s so you! 🙂
