Chalkboard walls are a fun addition to any space! I adore the vintage green chalkboard wall we created in our new farmhouse style living room space and can’t wait to show you how you can create your own chalkboard wall in any colour.
Okay, so y’all have been gushing about our vintage green chalkboard wall since I revealed our new farmhouse style family room space last week …
It seems to be one of your favourite things about the space! Well, I’m with you friends! That big old green wall definitely brings some fun personality and works as a perfect balance for all that white throughout the rest of the space.
Don’t get me wrong, y’all know how much I LOVE all things neutral.
In fact, I had originally planned a black chalkboard wall, which of course, was waaaaay out of my comfort zone already.
But, then I came across this gorgeous photo from none other than my gal Jo-Jo (I like to pretend we’d be besties if we ever had the chance to meet in real life)…
And I just couldn’t get that vintage green chalkboard out of my head. I had to have a chalkboard wall. And now, it had to be that gorgeous schoolhouse green.
So, once we had ourselves a wall again (you can catch up with that story here), I got straight to work.
After a quick coat of primer, I rolled on a couple of coats of Beauti-Tone’s Jungle Adventure (available at Home Hardware). Friends, I hunted high and low for the perfect school house green and there’s no doubt that I found it with this one!
Thankfully (we were working under a pretty tight deadline after all (read more about why here), this brilliant paint roller from Home Right made SUCH quick work of it all – I had that entire wall painted in just minutes! And even better, it was virtually mess free (anyone who knows me, knows how important a quality that is in my life)!
It was so nice to ditch the trays for this brilliant valve system! It simply clipped to the side of my paint can and, with a quick pull of the paint stick handle, I was all loaded up and ready to paint.
I LOVED not having to walk back and forth to my tray to load up with paint over and over and over! I only had to stop to reload once on this entire wall (mostly because it took nearly one full tube of paint to get the roller completely loaded up to begin with). And it was all SO simple to use! With a quick twist of the handle, I could reload my roller with paint while it was moving across the wall. Now tell me that’s not the most brilliant idea since sliced bread!!!
Once my wall was dry, it was time to transform it into a chalkboard. A couple of coats of this clear chalkboard paint later, and I had myself the most dreamy vintage green chalkboard wall!
Now, a word of warning … this stuff is not like any other paint you’ve seen before. It’s thick, goey and more closely resembles that white glue you played with in elementary school than it does any sort of paint. It’s a bit tricky to roll on – I found it best to not roll over the same spot more than a few times.
But it works.
It allows you to create a beautiful chalkboard on any surface and with any colour.
I was sure to “season” it by rubbing a piece of chalk over the entire wall (sidewalk chalk makes really quick work of this part) and then wiping the excess away. And, after a big old chalk dusty mess, I finally had my chalkboard wall!!!

Honestly, I even surprised myself with this one, but I absolutely adore this wall! I think it brings so much character to the space!
Since creating this wall, I’ve come across a couple of other products that I think are worth mentioning as well: (1) Beauti-Tone makes a chalkboard base paint that is tintable in 100 colours, saving you that extra step of painting on two coats of chalkboard paint; (2) Rustoleum also makes a green chalkboard paint (along with many other colours), which seems obvious to me after the fact, but wasn’t presented as an option on the shelves when I was in shopping, so never really occurred to me.
For your convenience, I’ve gathered up some of my favourite tools to help you create your own custom chalkboard:
HUGE thanks to the folks at HomeRight for sponsoring this post and making it so darn easy to not only paint my home, but to recommend their fantastic products!

hey girl love the wall! So cool!
Thank you so, so much!!!
It turned out fantastic. I have been reluctant to try chalk paint. I hope the end result looks as good as yours looks.
Thank you so, so much! I LOVE working a chalkboard into almost every space!
Kristi the wall is absolutely stunning!! Definitely my favorite part of the room. I love that it’s green instead of the typical black chalkboard.
Awwww, well thank you Sarah! I had no idea I would LOVE it so much too!
I am feeling a bit inspired here! I have several ceilings that need to be painted, and the paint to do the job, but I have been putting off this dreaded job for months. However, I think the paint-stick tool you used might be just what I need! Thanks for sharing, Kristi.
Oh good! That paint stick really is absolutely brilliant!!! You’ll love it Pam!
You have inspired me to do my own!!! Scary process as its a huge statement…..and THE only green in my house! Ha what color did you use for surrounding walls?
I know just what you mean Sheena! It’s the only green in our house too, but somehow it seems to work like a neutral. The rest of the walls around it are {Cloud White} from Benjamin Moore. Happy painting!!!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much!
I love this idea. We have a chalkboard pantry door, but my kids would have a blast with this! Thanks for sharing at merry monday! ๐
Thanks Dee!!!
You have a lovely home. I am enjoying all of your pictures and projects. I also love two pieces of furniture in this gathering room. Can you tell me where you got them from? There is a cube storage unit with about 9 sections and the piece that the TV is on. I really like both!
Thank you so, so much Jeanne! I love those pieces too! I picked them both up at The Brick, you can find them both here: http://www.thebrick.com/search?keyword=barrister%20lane.
Thanks Kristi. I am in the U.S. and I have been able to find a few places I can get these pieces. I want to use them in my sewing room to store fabric, books, and supplies. There is so much clutter now.
I’m so happy you found them! They’d make such perfect storage for fabrics and books!
