Hello friends! It’s definitely a happy, happy day!!!
In fact, it’s a perfect day for a farmhouse style family room reveal, don’t you think?
It’s been six looooooong weeks since we first announced our plans to renovate this bland and boring family room.

We had some pretty big plans for the space – a bit of paint, changing out that old fan, adding some wood planks to the walls…
And well, moving the light to the centre of the room, re-drywalling the entire ceiling, tearing down and rebuilding an entire wall…
All in just six weeks.
It was a lot to take on in such a short amount of time. Turns out a bit too much actually. Just two short weeks ago, we were feeling entirely defeated. Pulling this all together in time was looking nothing short of impossible…
And then, my knight in shining armour arrived with his trusty sidekick to save the day (read: my sweet Uncle and cousin)!
Less than three days later, they had the room looking like a room again!
It was just the push we needed to get over that “I’m so overwhelmed I don’t even know where to start” hump and hubs and I powered through the rest of our long list in just more than a week.
Honestly, I still can’t believe it!
This One Room Challenge may have only been six weeks long (or two for us, but who’s counting?). But friends, Iโve been waiting ages for this cozy farmhouse style family room โฆ

I can’t wait to tell you all about how we created this beautiful space!!!
Once we found ourselves with four walls and a ceiling again (read more about that story here), I couldn’t wait to bring a bit of character into the space with some planked walls (you can find that tutorial here) and some farmhouse style trim (another tutorial here). And, because this family room has always been one of the darkest rooms in our home, I decided to paint everything white to keep it all feeling really light and bright.
Now, I’m not a big fan of the laminate flooring, but we’ve decided to live with it until we’re ready to work through the rest of our main floor so that we can tie it into the hardwood flooring we’d intend to lay throughout. Instead, I brought in a bit of warmth and texture with a chunky jute rug from Rugs USA.
We went to great lengths to move the light from the back corner of the room to the centre of the space and of course cover that awful popcorn ceiling while we were at it. I absolutely adore this rustic light from Wayfair.ca and really think it looks so perfect in the space!
Now, y’all know how much I love soft, neutral colours … but friends, I just couldn’t resist adding this fun accent wall that I painted out to look like a vintage chalkboard! Thanks to this brilliant paint roller from HomeRight, I had the whole thing painted out in just minutes!

And how gorgeous does it look with that wood barn style sliding door hanging in front it!!!
Once we made it through the hard part – you know construction, drywall (and all that darn dust that comes with it), and of course the hours and hours of painting … I couldn’t have been more excited to finally start moving in the furniture and decor accessories. Styling the space is always my favourite part of any room makeover – it’s truly when the space comes to life.
Now, there’s no doubt that the star of the show here is definitely that gorgeous sectional from The Brick!
There’s nothing like custom made furniture to really make a space your own, so when I found out that The Brick offers custom designs that are manufactured right here in Alberta, I couldn’t resist creating a custom piece that would perfectly suit our needs in the space.
I loved having the chance to choose the style, configuration and even fabric to create the perfect piece for our family!
And I have to say, this beautiful sofa totally exceeded my expectations! The fabric is timelessly classic and it’s just so comfy to curl up on!
Especially piled high with these luxurious pillows from Tonic Living (hello velvet!) and a few super cute designs from So Vintage Chic!
And I couldn’t resist adding a matching ottoman to the mix – it’ll be perfect to pull up around the coffee table for a bit of extra seating when we need.
I am head over heels in L-O-V-E with that beautiful trunk table sitting in the middle of it all!

I picked it up at The Brick because I adored the rustic style and actually intended to leave it as it was, thinking that the dark colour would bring a fun contrast to the space. But, at the last minute, I had a total change of heart and decided to paint out the bottom and refinish the top to lighten things up a bit.
I think it turned out so perfectly!
Keeping with the farmhouse feel of the space, I chose to go with this beautiful TV stand and the matching bookcase, both from The Brick as well.
The rustic details add some lovely character and the light colours of the wood fit the space perfectly!

And can we just stop a minute and chat about that ahhhhhhmazing new TV?! Hubs is over the moon to have finally replaced the old relic that we’ve had since first moving in together 10 years ago. Considering we have just the one TV in our home, we really wanted to make it count. I think we totally knocked it out of the park with this incredible television from The Brick!
Okay, all television gushing aside, clearly we needed a few other things to look at in this space as well. I’m so excited to have this incredible custom piece from local sign shop, William Rae Designs!
I think it really stands out with those rustic lanterns hanging on either side of it!
And Courtney, the owner was SO sweet that she let me grab a few extras from her workshop while I was there too (it took everything I had not to walk away with one of everything!). So, I hung a few sweet signs over the bookshelf as well…
And of course, what farmhouse style family room would be complete without a ginormous, rusty metal clock? I hunted high and low for months for the perfect one, so you can imagine how excited I was when I came across this beauty at Urban Barn (and for 20% off, now tell me that’s not meant to be!).
I think it’s so fun to pair the soft, vintage elements with the more industrial or rustic – I love, love, love how pretty these simple lace curtains look hanging from the new curtain rod we created with galvanized pipe.
Finally, a few old windows and candlesticks piled on top of the fireplace later, we had ourselves a finished space!
Honestly, I still can’t believe we made it through this one. What an absolute whirlwind it’s been, but as always, it was totally worth every stressful minute, every late night and every up an down along the way.
Just look at how far we’ve come!
I absolutely adore this new farmhouse style family room and can’t wait to relax and enjoy it with our little family!

Wow, Kristi, I just want to jump up and down over your new family space! I can’t imagine how you and your husband could have transformed it better. I never knew I could love a green wall so much; the chalkboard treatment rocks. All and all this room is a big winner. Cheers, Ardith
Awwwww, well thank you Ardith! It was a tough six weeks for sure, but so worth it in the end. And I even surprised myself with that green chalkboard wall, but it’s so fun! I can’t thank you enough for your kind and encouraging words along the way my friend!
That green is so bold, Kristi! I love it! You did such a great job. All of you Canadians seem to have the coziest living rooms <3
Hahaha! We need them! ๐ Thanks so much Brittany!
It looks awesome! I love your chalkboard wall, the pendant and all the farmhouse touches! So glad you got it finished in time. You will enjoy this space so much!
Thank you! I’m absolutely thrilled with how it all came together in the end!
There is so much dust that comes with drywall, but you made it and it looks fantastic!!!!!! Nailed it!
SOOOOO much! I’m still finding it piled up around the house! Thanks so much Kyla!
Wow Kristi, it has so much character, warmth, and charm! Another amazing ORC transformation in your home. Love the chalkboard wall, sliding door, light fixture, and amazing wall art. What surprised me most is that you decided NOT to change the fireplace and yet it looks so much better now! Sit back and enjoy movie nights in your new space and I can’t wait to see how you decorate it for the holidays.
P.S. I know you’re going to do another one and I can’t wait to see which room you choose next.
You are always so darn sweet, thank you so much Marie! I’m totally over the moon with how it all turned out! I agree about the fireplace – it was totally lost in the old space and I had no idea what I was going to do with it, but once we got the walls done, I knew the wood would really pop next to the white. Thanks again my friend!
I love it! AND I think you did more than some of the others bc u did you wall and drywall and did it ourself ~ Good job!
Thanks so much June! If we hadn’t had to move that wall, this would have certainly been SO much easier, but it’ll be worth it when we finally get around to creating that mudroom space!
This is really a wonderful makeover! It looks so comfy and charming. I think my favorite things are the chalkboard and barn door wall, and the overall lightness of the space.
Thanks so much Pam! The whole space feels so much lighter and brighter and I absolutely adore that chalkboard wall too!
Wow! I love the green chalkboard wall so much! The room looks great!
Thank you Emy! I really love how that chalkboard wall turned out too!
It’s GORGEOUS, Kristi!!! You guys did SO much work and it looks amazing! I especially love the green chalkboard wall!!!
Thank you Nicole! What a whirlwind, but we made it it! And better yet, I love it so much more than I’d even imagined!
YAY!!!! Congrats! You made it! ๐ It was so fun to watch the progress. I’m about ready to hop in the car and drive up to Canada and steal everything from this room… so lock your doors. Haha. I absolutely LOVE how it all turned out. It looks amazing. I think my favorite part is the chalkboard wall (love that you chose green and not black) or maybe that big shelving unit… or maybe the custom wood sign.. haha I can’t choose a favorite. I have a lantern that I’ve been wanting to hang on our living room wall and we were just about ready to build a shelf because I didn’t think I could find a hook deep enough, but the one you used to hang the lantern may work for us. Where did you get that hook??!?!
Come on up girl!!! Would love to have you for a visit (as long as you don’t drive away with my new family room!). ๐ It was SUCH a long six weeks, but I’m so, so happy with how it all came together! Thank you so much for your encouraging words along the way!!! The hook is from Pottery Barn (there’s a link at the end of my post) – this is actually the smaller version and sticks out 7″ I think, so if this one doesn’t work for you, the larger size might! Thanks again friend!
There is just so much to love in this room: the chalkboard wall makes such a statement, that bookshelf, the lighting… I just love it! Beautiful job! (So happy that your uncle and cousin were able to help you create such a gorgeous space ๐ )
Thanks Erin! We’re so happy with how it all came together and SO incredibly grateful for the help we had along the way!
Omg, Kristi, I love so many things about this space!! The chalkboard wall, the barn door, the “family” sign, the coffee table, the light fixtures, the clock, I could go on and on. What a perfect space!! Enjoy it!
Awwww, well thank you Meg! We’re so, so happy with how perfectly it all came together!
So cozy and inviting. That chalkboard wall and barn door are amazing!
Thanks so much Jessica!!! I love the look of the wood door paired with that chalkboard wall too!
Yes, yes, yes!! A reveal I’ve been looking forward to and I am loving.it.all!! Such a stunning transformation. I’m seriously swooning over that chalkboard wall and pendant light! ALL the heart eyes!!!! Congrats, my friend!
You are so darn sweet! Thank you so, so much Jen! I am head over heels in love with this space too! xo
Yay! You made it! Everything turned out so beautifully! Some of my favourite things are that rustic barn door, the galvanized pipe curtain rod, that giant clock, the green chalkboard wall, the lantern scones and of course, the shiplap! From your fellow farmhouse loving Canadian prairie friend – fantastic job!!!
Ahhhh, thank you Kari! You are so super sweet! I still can’t believe we pulled it all off in time!
Kristi!! Seriously!! You totally knocked it outta the park. It is absolutely amazing. I love that classic green chalkboard wall!! What a fun touch. And all the warm, natural, rustic touches that you added – you guys did such an incredible job!!
Thank you so, so much Krista! Feels great to be done and I couldn’t be happier with it all!
Kristi, the room is so beautiful and in keeping with your calm, warm style. The thing that I totally didn’t expect was the green wall. It reminds me of the chalkboard walls in my kids school. And it looks absolutely gorgeous and really ties the whole room together with the natural elements that you have sprkinkeled throughout. Another great room is done! Girl they should give you a show on tv!!
Awwwww, you are much too sweet Mary! Thank you so, so much for your kind words! I’m thrilled that you love it as much as we do and I have to say, that chalkboard wall was as surprising to me as it was to you! ๐
So proud of you! You are so talented! Love the sconces on the wall, very barn feel. Its just amazing how it turned out.
Maria
Thank you so much Maria! I still can’t believe we pulled it all off in time! I’m absolutely head over heels in love with how it all came together!
It’s soooo good! I don’t think it’s a surprise that I am obsessed with that green chalkboard wall. They are everything! The whole room is so perfect! That sectional is lovely and that sign above…. I need one! Congrats on getting it all finished! Some people think we are crazy for choosing to do this, but I think it’s totally worth it.
Thank you so much Sara! I’ve always loved your chalkboard wall and your new bathroom is absolutely stunning!!! Each time we do this I feel crazier than the time before, but your right, it’s ALWAYS totally worth it! xo
Kristi, what a gorgeous Family Room you have created! I just love it! Everything is my favorite!

Awwww, well thank you so much ladies! Still can’t believe we made it through, but it was totally worth it in the end!
Kristi- this is so amazing. I feel like you deserve a giant handclap for A) working out an amazing floor plan with a corner fireplace (because they can be so awkward!) and B) that chalkboard wall with your media cabinet and that gorgeous barn door is just a thing of beauty!! This space does not disappoint- it is simply beautiful!! Well done.
You are much too sweet! Thank you so, so much! I agree, planning around a corner fireplace is very difficult – it took us a few tries, and a ton of tape on the floor to finally figure out a layout that would work. And I absolutely adore that chalkboard wall too! Thanks again!!!
I love everything about this room! I want to just take it and move it all into my family room! Haha!!! Congrats on completing it all in time.
Awwww, well thank you Katy! We’re really SO happy with how it all came together!

-Jaclyn

Another gorgeous room, Kristi! I am totally in love with your idea to paint the wall behind the TV as a “vintage chalkboard”! I created a small green one at the bottom of my stairs, but I LOVE your idea to make it into a feature wall – SO cool!
Awwww, well thank you Jenny! I may have some plans to create a smaller version someday too! ๐
Another beautiful space in the books, Kristi!! I love the slightly unexpected green wall!! Your styling is always gorgeous and adore that word art flanked by the lanterns. And thank goodness for family who are able to help out when we need it!! ๐

I absolutely love how your room turned out! That green chalkboard wall is so fun. I always love your style.
Thank you so, so much Kati!!! It’s definitely a cozy space!
I love the room and your style. It turned out beautifully. 39 pictures of the finished space was a bit excessive though. I’m always dumbfounded as to why some bloggers feel they need to share so many pictures of the same space.
Thank you so much Lucy, I’m so happy you loved it! I’m sorry to hear you found the number of photos excessive – we worked SO hard on this space and it’s always difficult to really do a space justice with only photos to share. I just had the hardest time in the world narrowing things down to what might showcase the space best. I’ll definitely try to be a bit more discerning next time. Thanks again!
This is just crazy! Wow, what a great job you did on this room. Thank you for sharing it with us–inspiration abounds!
Thanks for joining the Grace at Home party. I’m featuring you this week!
Thank you so, so much Richelle! We couldn’t be happier with how it all came together! I’m thrilled that you loved it all enough to share, thanks again!
wow! this room looks amazing! I love the barn door and all the lanterns!!
Thank you so, so much Tianna! We’re thrilled with how it all came together!
Beautiful! What size wall hooks did you use for the lanterns? The small or large?
Thank you Jennifer! I used the small hooks for the lanterns.
Hi Kristi,
I absolutely love this look, great job!! Where did you get the hooks to hang the two lanterns?
Thank you so, so much Nancy! I found the lantern hooks here: http://rstyle.me/n/b5fkwmbz687.
What an amazingly beautiful room! I absolutely love that style! And the family sign above the couch, I’m going to have to recreate that one myself!
Awwwww, you are much too sweet! Thank you so, so much Liz!
I love the lanterns!! Where did you end up getting the hooks?
Thank you! I found the hooks to hang them here: http://rstyle.me/n/b5fkwmbz687.
Love, love, love this space!! So cozy and inviting. My favorite pieces are the clock, the coffee table and that beautiful “Family” sign behind the sofa. Would you mind sharing the dimensions of your sign? Again, congratulations on a beautiful space!
Awwww, well thank you Tammy! I’m so happy you loved it! You can find all of the details about the sign here: http://rstyle.me/n/ciqn6hbz687. Thanks again for your kind words!
Hello did you use the small or large later hooks?
Hi Gladys, I used the small hooks to hang these lanterns. ๐
