Sharing our plans to create a light + airy, modern farmhouse living room space…
Although it’s not quite done just yet, I’m SO over-the-moon excited to welcome y’all to our new modern farmhouse living room…
We’ve been in the throws of this massive renovation project for a few months now, but it was just last week that I finally got around to sharing our design plans for each space. Spoiler alert: it included light + airy neutrals, lots of rich texture and loads of farmhouse charm.
Last week was all about the big stuff – the shiplap, hardwood and paint colours, but today I can’t wait to share all of the furniture we’ve brought in to create the most cozy, modern farmhouse living room…
Modern Farmhouse Living Room Design
Our biggest goal through this entire renovation has been to create a cozy, welcoming space that we can gather with all of our family + friends.
So, I’m sure it’s no surprise that our starting point in furnishing this space was choosing a big, comfy sofa. When we were shopping for our family room last Fall, I had hunted high and low, travelling to the far corners of the Earth (online of course) looking for that perfect sofa – one that was both gorgeous AND comfortable. I searched for months to find that ever elusive combination of qualities. And then, I learned something that would forever change the way I shop for living room furniture …
Did you know that The Brick makes custom furniture?
Now, there’s no doubt that you’d be hard pressed to find a fellow Canadian that hasn’t heard of (or probably shopped at) The Brick. But, do you think I could find one person that knew that they offered custom furniture options?! Even better, not only are they soft, cozy and comfortable with beautiful fabrics to choose from, they’re the least expensive custom upholstery option on the market, making them an incredible value! And our very favourite part, each piece in their Designed 2B collection is manufactured right here in Canada!
There’s really no better way to get exactly what you want than to design it yourself and with the Designed 2B collection from The Brick it couldn’t be simpler to create the perfect sofa for your space, your style and your life.
We were SO happy with the custom sofa we’d designed for our family room, I knew we’d choose to go this route again for our living room space.
There are so many things to consider when designing your own custom sofa, including style, layout and fabrics (you can find all of my custom design tips here), it can all get a little overwhelming (especially when there are so many other design decisions rolling around my head already!). In keeping with my farmhouse loving style, I went with the more traditional Dove style sofa putting together all of the individual pieces to create a sectional layout that would fit our space perfectly.
I love that the Dove style has a lower profile, which helps to keep the whole space feeling open.
I’m sure it’s no surprise that with 24 fabrics to choose from, I had a really hard time settling on just one favourite, but in the end I chose to go with the light coloured, linen texture of the Sophisticate Fog fabric (which just so happens to be the same colour as our family room sofa). I think the light colour will help to keep that light + airy feeling throughout the space and I adore the rich linen-like texture.
Though the big sectional sofa will bring with it a ton of seating, we wanted to really maximize the seating options throughout the space (after all, we plan to be hosting all of our friends and family on the regular now), so we chose to bring in a pair of beautiful custom arm chairs to add to either side of the fireplace as well. I wanted to bring in a bit of a contrast in colour and texture, so instead of sticking with the same fabric as our sofa, we went with a soft chenille fabric in Lavish Grey.
These low profile arm chairs have a classic design that will never go out of style and I think the soft, velvety chenille fabric will bring a beautiful rich, cozy texture to really ground each side of our brick fireplace. Plus, with a matching 24×24 ottoman parked at the foot of them, these chairs will be cozier than ever to curl up in beside the fire.
Instead of a coffee table, we wanted something a bit cozier, so we opted for this oversized custom Designed2B 34×34 Ottoman in the same Sophisticate Fog as our sofa. I think the cushy top will be the perfect place to put our feet up and I love that we can push it off to the side for even more seating when we’ve got a full house of people.
Finally, we’ve ordered up this 49″ Sony smart TV to mount over the fireplace. Admittedly, I’m not a big fan of TV’s mounted over a fireplace (I have been loving the look of ours since painting over the brick), but I just couldn’t resist the temptation of curling up on that big comfy couch to watch a movie with the family. Plus, it might just be the saddest of dreams, but I’ve always wanted to be able to watch the news while cooking dinner. Because of its low profile and fantastic picture quality, we went with this Sony Smart TV from The Brick. Plus, it’s got this brilliant voice control feature that makes navigating through the apps and channels an absolute dream (we have a bigger version in our family room and absolutely love it)!
When we embarked on this crazy main floor renovation, our main goal was to create an open, airy, cozy space that we could enjoy with all of our family and friends. I have no doubt all of these beautiful pieces from The Brick will come together to create a welcoming space we’ll enjoy for years to come!
