5 ways to cozy up a cold, rainy day.

We had a pretty slow start to our Summer here in Northern Alberta, with most of July bringing cooler, almost Spring-like days with a whole lot of rain mixed in. Luckily, our August made up for it with an almost month long stretch of Summer sun. I’ll tell you, nobody appreciates those warm Summer days more than those of us that spend most of the year surrounded by cold and snow!
I do have to say though, after weeks of nothing but blue skies and sunshine, it’s so much easier to appreciate a day of clouds and rain. In fact, in the middle of a heat wave, there’s nothing I crave more than the coziness of a crisp, cool rainy day – because there are just some things that made better by a rainy day. So today, I thought I’d share a few of my favourites with you.
5 ways to cozy up a cold, rainy day

LIGHT A CANDLE

I can never resist warming up our home with the glow of a flickering candle on a cloudy day. I’ve linked up some of my favourites below, or you can see how I made the beautiful scented candle pictured above with this tutorial.
Spend some time in the kitchen

I’ve said it so many times, but filling the house with the scent of baking has long been one of my favourite ways to warm up our home on a cold, dreary day. If you need some inspiration, check out what I’ve been pinning here. Or, you can find some of my favourite baking recipes here, including the zucchini bread I’m whipping up today (it’s seriously THE BEST EVER!).

curl up with a cozy craft

One of my favourite ways to spend a rainy afternoon is curling up on the couch in front of some old reruns of Friends or The Office, with a cozy crafting project spread across my lap. Lately I’ve really been loving working on embroidery projects, especially these simple little kits that come with everything I need to create the prettiest little hoop art projects. You can read more about some of my favourite home hobbies here or I’ve linked up some of my favourite cozy craft tutorials below.

pull out a puzzle or board game

There’s nothing cozier or more nostalgic feeling than gathering around a puzzle or board game with the family. We almost always have a puzzle on the go around here – somedays it’s just a few quiet moments to ourselves to pop in a piece or two and sometimes we all gather round to work and somehow hours pass and before we know it it’s getting to dark to make out the colours anymore. This puzzle mat has been one of our best puzzling finds ever, it makes it so easy to clear the puzzle mess from our table for meal times.
We’re also BIG fans of board games around here. We’ve got a pretty big selection, but our new go-to favourite has been good old Monopoly. I LOVE that Carson is getting old enough to play some of the classics now!
popcorn + a movie

When it comes to cozy, it’s hard to beat curling up under a pile of blankets to watch a movie. Especially with a big bowl of popcorn to share. We’ve been enjoying all sorts of classics on Disney+ lately – not only is it so nostalgic to watch some of these old movies from our childhood, but it’s so fun to see Carson enjoying all of our old favourites.

Though I’m soaking in every minute of these sunshiny days of Summer, there’s just something about a cozy, rainy day every once in a while that really recharges the soul.

Kristi, I love your living room! It looks so serene and peaceful. I wish I knew how to knit because that blanket you made needs to be in my house. LOL. Great ideas for not only a rainy day – but for quarantine days as well!
Awww, well thank you Jennifer! And I agree, I’ve definitely been spending more time doing most of these these last several months.
Love your cozy rainy day ideas! We had two very long wet days last week.
Thanks Danielle! It’s nice to have a cozy, rainy day every once in a while.
I marvel at your needlework every time I see it. Such a talented girl 🙂 I’m with you, I’ve also been filling the house with baked good and zucchini bread is one of my all time favorites. Beautiful photos, as always.
Thanks so much Dawn!!!
