All of the Finishes Throughout our Home
Sharing how we’re mixing & matching all of the finish choices we’re using throughout our home.

We’ve officially been renovating this new/old house of ours for nearly two years now – updating each space with paint, lighting and new furniture & finishings. While some of our choices feel less permanent, like many of the changes around our main floor (read more about our quick & easy no-reno updates here), others definitely feel like more of a long-term commitment. For example, when choosing the paint colours around our main floor, I thought of it in terms of a trial run – testing out options so I can feel a bit more sure when the time comes for a more thorough renovation. Knowing some of these choices would only be temporary definitely took a lot of the pressure off. The further we get into our renovations though, the more high stakes decisions we’re having to make – decisions for flooring, trim, lighting and other finishes that will be far more permanent than paint colours. Committing to some of these design decisions has felt much more daunting to me, especially when it comes to finishes that will be repeated throughout our home (ie: doorknobs, flooring, trim work, etc.). Luckily, I’m finding that with each decision we make, it often narrows our options for the next, which means that each decision becomes a little easier as we go.

As we work our way through all of the various design and finish choices throughout each space, it’s important to consider how they not only work together within a particular room, but also within our home as a whole. I like to see colours, design elements and finishes repeated through different spaces to help bring a feeling of cohesiveness and connect the different rooms around our home.

We’ve started it all with a neutral base of Cloud White on all of our walls and trim, bringing in accents of Natural Cream, Black Beauty and Briarwood. Most of our lighting has been swapped out for more transitional options in either oil rubbed bronze or brass. I think the majority of our plumbing fixtures will be done in a polished nickel, including our kitchen down the road, but I’d like to find some other places to bring in more polished nickel as well. All of our doors will be swapped out for these and the doorknobs will be these in an unlacquered brass finish. We’ve chosen to go with these hardwood floors throughout our home and I think we’ve landed on these baseboards and this coordinating trim for the trim around the doors and windows throughout our whole house.
While we’ve still got many more rooms to go around here, all I see is even more opportunity to build off of the colours and finish choices we’ve already made – repeating the ORB, brass and polished nickel metals, wicker textures and even bringing in some muted blues, greens and yellows. It’s going to be SO good!
Wishing you SUCH a lovely day my friends!ย
