These rustic DIY wood shutters took just minutes to whip up and there are SO many ways to put them to work in your home decor.
Okay, so it’s no secret I love farmhouse style. There’s just something about the soft, neutral colours, the chippy paint and of course, all that rustic wood that melts my heart. I love the coziness that all that character brings to a space.
And friends, nothing says farmhouse like those charming antique elements with a long story to tell.
There’s the obvious – an old piece of furniture…
But, what really adds character to a space, is the unexpected.
One of my very favourite things to decorate with are those vintage architectural items – particularly antique doors and windows. The possibilities to be creative with them are absolutely endless!
Here’s the thing though – it can be hard to find that perfect piece. Especially if you’ve got a vision of what you’re looking for. Finding the real deal could take ages. Or sometimes you find that perfect piece, but the price tag just isn’t one you can live with.
Lucky for us, there’s usually a way to make one instead!
Case and point, these rustic shutters:
If you’ve been following along with our journey at all, this isn’t the first time you’ve come across these cedar shutters.
In fact, y’all have been asking for this tutorial for ages now and I’m so thrilled to finally be showing you how I created these simple DIY wood shutters.

Wishing you SUCH a lovely day!
These shutters are so gorgeous! And I agree– it can be SO DIFFICULT to find something super specific. I’ve been looking for an apothecary of a specific size for years and everything is always too big or too small! I definitely think I’m going to have to build my own. 😀 Thanks for sharing this post!
Thank you SO much! I know just what you mean – you definitely should think about building your own!!!
Kristi, love your ideas! My husband put a “Welcome To Our Home” shutter together for me out of old barn boards! I showed him your post and he went outside and made one! I just love to see it standing by our door with an old crock filled with red willow and pine branches!
Have a great day, my friend! God Bless!
Awwwww, that’s amazing! What a guy! I’m so, so thrilled that you were feeling so inspired and I bet it’s so beautiful made from those old barn boards! Thank you so much for sharing Mary-Ann! xo
