Rounding up all of the tall black cabinets we’re considering for our Study.
When you need to bring a modern touch to a space, add a bit of contrast, or maybe you just feel like your space is missing something that you can’t quite put your finger on, I swear, nine times out of ten, the answer is a pop of black. Black can feel like a bold choice, but it’s actually a pretty classic element when you really stop to think about it. I’d say it’s all in the way you choose to use it in your space that can help it to lean a little more traditional or modern.
We have a lot of elements in our home that tend to bring a more dated feel – things like honey oak, polished brass and colourful carpet choices (basically every trend you can think of from the 90’s). Luckily, I’m finding that scattering in a bit of black here & there has been just the ticket to counterbalance that. It’s amazing how pretty honey oak can look with the dark contrast of black beside it to help it feel a little less dated.

As we’ve been working our way through our Study renovation, bringing in a few pops of black has definitely been front of mind. Knowing that this space is pretty heavy on the honey oak (a design element we have no intentions of changing at the moment), I think working in some more modern elements (ie: bold contrast of black) will go such a long way to balance out the dated feel in the space. I’m planning to sprinkle a few smaller scale black elements, mainly hardware and accent decor, but I’d also love to bring in something a bit larger in scale too. We’ve got this little alcove tucked into the corner next to our desk and I thought it would be the perfect spot to bring in a bold, black cabinet. Not only would it give me some storage space for office supplies and some display shelves (though we’ve certainly got no shortage of that in there already), but I think a tall black cabinet could be just the bold contrast this space needs to bring a bit more of a modern feel. I love the look of both modern and tradition juxtaposed within a space, it really lends an elevated, collected feeling, which is just what we’re going for in here (you can read more about our design plans for our Study here).
