Sharing a quick progress update in creating a modern cottage boy’s bedroom.

Well my friends, as you can see, things are looking much different up in Carson’s new modern cottage style bedroom! When we last chatted, I shared our design plans for this space, which included all the ways we hoped to bring some cottage charm into this otherwise plain and boring room. We walked you through many of the design and decor options we were considering and talked about which ones we’d decided on in the end.
Arguably the design element that would to have the biggest impact in this space was the wall paneling we’d hoped to install all around the room. After looking through a few different options for wall treatments, Carson landed on a modern cottage style vertical shiplap wainscoting and Brady got right to work installing it that very weekend.
But then it just kind of sat there for a couple of weeks while I worked up the motivation to fill the hundreds of nail holes and caulk all of the joints. I knew all of that patching, sanding and caulking was going to be a tedious, time-consuming task and honestly, it was even worse than I’d imagined. Caulking is always my least favourite thing to tackle and caulking around all of those “nickel gaps” seemed to take forever, but it always makes SUCH a huge difference to making things feel more finished and polished on the other side (you can see what I mean in the before + after photos below!).
Finally, with all that tedious work behind me, it was time to pull out the paint. Of all the things we have planned for this little room, the beautiful green that Carson chose was the part I’d been looking forward to the most. I just knew that bold paint colour would really bring that shiplap wainscoting to life and bring so much personality into this space. After getting the ceiling and upper walls all freshened up with a couple of coats of Cloud White, I finally got to pull out that gorgeous green paint for the shiplap and trim work.
Painting all of those gaps was another tedious and time-consuming task and I may have spent the majority of my weekend with a paintbrush in my hand, climbing up and down a ladder for hours on end, but oh my gosh, was it ever worth it!

Carson landed on this gorgeous Cushing Green months ago and I couldn’t have chosen better myself! It’s the most lovely grey-green colour and, as you can see through the photos, it’s such a complex colour that totally changes with the light – depending on the time of day or even the spot you happen to be standing in, it can read more green, grey or even teal. I decided to continue the colour around all of the trim work and doors around the room, which I think brings even more charm & character to the space.

We also managed to get Carson’s new bed built (you can catch our favourite cottage style bed options here), though I hadn’t realized how thick his box spring and mattress were – the way things are set up now, he’ll need a step stool to climb into bed at night! We’ve decided to order a new mattress base so that we can ditch the box spring and lower the total height of the mattress to something a little more reasonable. In the mean time, we’re planning to get started on building out the custom closet with the hopes that we can have this room ready to move into in just a few short weeks! Wish us luck!

Wishing you SUCH a lovely day!
