Well, the BIG Day is FINALLY here!
Four short weeks ago, I teamed up with Nicole at Meet the B’s to bring you The Outdoor Makeover Challenge. Together, we set out to completely redesign our outdoor spaces in less than one month! Taking advantage of some bargain shopping and a ton of DIY’s the goal was to transform our spaces with a budget friendly makeover. These last four weeks have definitely been a whirlwind of designing, shopping and of course, DIY’ing! If you’ve been following along with us, then I’m sure you are just as excited as I am to see how it’s all come together! So, let’s cut the chitchat and get on with things!!!
I am SO, SO thrilled to share with you today our brand new courtyard deck…
There really is a ton to take in here, so let me walk you through every juicy detail.
Let’s start with the main focal point of the space, this gorgeous Pottery Barn inspired table…
Although I’d fallen head-over-heals in love with the original Pottery Barn version, I just couldn’t justify spending $2700 on something that would sit covered in snow for most of the year, so hubs and I decided to make our own version instead (read more about how we got the look for less here). For less than $150, we built this custom DIY table and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!
This lovely rug is doing a wonderful job of hiding our weathered floor boards, which by the way are looking so rustic, they’re almost trendy … almost.
I hunted high and low for a bright rug that would fit into my colour scheme (watch for some of my favorites next week), but in the end, mainly because of the 8×10 size, budget won out and I settled for this still very pretty, though more neutral coloured outdoor rug from Rugs USA. On sale for 60% off, how could I resist?
Finding the right chairs for the ends of the table proved to be another seemingly endless search. I found a pair that I LOVED at Wayfair, but again, just couldn’t justify the price tag. So, I hunted for weeks, but couldn’t for the life of me, find anything I loved for a price that I was willing to pay. That is, until we were trapped in Calgary with a flat tire that turned out to be a blessing in disguise – I’ll admit I was quite grumpy about having to wait around for a few hours to get everything all fixed up, particularly because of the 7 hours of driving we still had to make it through that day, but when Brady mentioned an IKEA close by, it was like the clouds parting and I was instantly in MUCH better spirits! I mean, who doesn’t love a trip to IKEA? Made even more special of course by the fact that it has literally been years since I’ve had the chance to step through those glorious blue doors (thanks to small town living)! Anyway, the chairs … I’m sure it’s obvious from my ramblings that I found the perfect ones at IKEA that morning – they were the very first things that we saw when we walked in and they were absolutely perfect!
I think that they look fabulous at each end of the table and I love that they can fold up to tuck away in the corner when they’re not needed! Best of all, they were only $40 each!
These pillows were actually the jumping off point for my colour scheme. I fell in love with the blues, grey and mint and thought it would be super easy to match them with all sorts of different decor pieces! I found them on sale at West Elm for only $10 each!
I’m also looking forward to wrapping that lovely soft blanket around me on those cold summer nights! It was yet another score from West Elm at only $10!
I had SO much fun setting this beautiful table with all sorts of colourful accessories!
I started with this table runner and the matching napkins from World Market. These linens are SO gorgeous, I didn’t mind spending some money on them because I could really use them any time of year, indoors or out.
To bring even more colour to the table, I made these super cute charger plates myself by painting some inexpensive bamboo plates with a bit of craft paint (see the full tutorial here).
I searched EVERYWHERE for the perfect dishes to set this beautiful table with and in the end, decided on these simple white ones from Bed Bath and Beyond. And I just couldn’t resist getting the matching serving bowl too.
Finally, I found these AMAZING glasses at World Market for $3 each … seriously, $3 for the absolute PERFECT outdoor glasses!!!
For a bit of extra lighting, I painted up these $1 votives with a bit Looking Glass spray paint (you can find the full tutorial here). I absolutely LOVE the touch of sparkle they add!
Add in a few extra accessories from IKEA and I think we’ve got ourselves a colourful and welcoming outdoor dining area that’ll be just PERFECT for entertaining!
I couldn’t possibly have an outdoor makeover without a few flowers and plants to bring some life to the space!
So, I planted some greenery in a few old planters I had sitting in the garage.
I am positively swooning over this lovely DIY Ladder Shelf that we built to tuck into the corner (see our full tutorial here)!!! It really gives THE MOST gorgeous pop of colour to our space!
And, it looks SO pretty all loaded up with our lovely things…
Last, but certainly not least, I couldn’t help but share a few more pictures of our AMAZING view … one of the reasons we fell in love with this house in the first place!
I cannot wait to enjoy our new outdoor space! I am SO, SO, SO happy with how it all turned out!!! We are definitely looking forward to spending our summer outside on our beautiful courtyard deck!
We are going to make SO MANY fun memories spending time with our family and friends in this lovely space!
So, in case y’all are wondering – here’s a final cost breakdown:
Table – $150
Rug – $130
Chairs – $80
Throw Pillows – $20
Blanket – $10
Table Linens – $57
Charger Plates – $20
Dishes – $85
Glasses – $24
Flowers & Plants – $50
DIY Ladder Shelf – $30
Few Odds and Sods from IKEA – $30
Grand Total – $686
Now, we are thrilled with how everything came together, but there were a few things that we didn’t quite get to, though to be fair, these were added to our list along the way. We are planning to build a small bar table for the other side of our sliding glass doors. It would be another fabulous way to inject some colour into the space, but mostly, we thought it would give us an extra place to set a tray of drinks down. We’d also like to find some solar lights to string over the table – this proved an impossible hunt for me through the challenge, but I’m hoping I will cross paths with the perfect ones sometime this summer.
As it is, it won’t be hard to enjoy this lovely space! Here’s one last look at the transformation…
Would LOVE to hear what you think of everything!
Now, I know that you are just as CRAZY excited to see what Nicole came up with for her outdoor space as I am, so be sure to head on over to Meet the B’s now to check it out!!!

Looks great! I love the blue leaning shelf and the chevron rug.
Thank you Julie!!! That shelf has stolen my heart too!
Everything looks so beautiful! So glad you were able to score some awesome chairs at IKEA. I would be broke if there was one within driving distance 🙂
Thank you SO much Ashley! We’re about 6 1/2 hours from the closest IKEA, so I don’t get to go often, but when I do, I’m reminded about what is missing in my life 😉
I love what you did with your outdoor space!!! Those shades of blue are just gorgeous and perfect for Summer! Pinned!

Thank you SO, SO much!!! I’m really happy with how it all came together!!!
Great photos! I’m visiting from the Fabulous Finds & TGIF linky party. I think the muted colors of the rug go well with the faded deck and the colors on the table are just gorgeous. I’ve already pinned two of your projects on my Craft Ideas and More board. Well done! Following you on Google+, Twitter and Pinterest. I have a weekend linky party on the go if you would like to link at http://abooksandmore.blogspot.com/2014/06/family-and-my-home-with-weekend-linky.html

Best wishes,
Natasha in Oz
Thank you SO much for your incredibly kind words! I’m heading over now 🙂
Looks absolutely beautiful! I love the colors you chose. I know how hard it can be to find outdoor chairs at a reasonable price too, those you found at IKEA are great! I wish I lived closer to an IKEA, I’ve only been there once in my life.
Tania
Thank you SO much Tania! I absolutely LOVE IKEA – knowing you have only been once makes me feel quite lucky to go once every couple of years 😉 Have you ever tried to order online? I know that you can purchase most things in their online store, but I have no idea what shipping costs are like. Thank you for popping by Tania!!!
What a beautiful transformation. Our outdoor space is seriously lacking and this gives me inspiration to get out there and start doing some projects (don’t know if the hubby will like that…lol). Thanks for sharing with us on Merry Monday…it’s always amazing to see your posts.
Thank you SO much Erlene!!! How could hubby not love a new outdoor space just in time for summer?! Brady was actually the one pushing me to get it done 😉 Thanks for popping by Erlene! Have a fabulous week!!!
You should be so proud of your deck, Kristi! It is amazing! I could name everything I love about it, but really, it’s ALL gorgeous! That table looks like it was $2700 and those end chairs are perfect! I love that DIY ladder… you are so talented, lady!! And that view!!! I love, love the mountains but a week of camping in the Rockies is as close as we get to a “view out our window”. 😉 Please come share it in the morning at Motivational Monday, on my blog tomorrow. It is simply stunning!
Kendra, you sure know how to make a girl blush! Thank you SO, SO much for your incredibly kind words! We are incredibly lucky to live here. We share your love for the mountains and found ourselves driving to visit them every chance we had, so 5 years ago we took the plunge to live where we vacationed and haven’t looked back! You will definitely see me tomorrow morning, thanks so much for the invite!
Simply gorgeous! An elegant way to use an outdoor spot without expending a lot of money. This is the true cheap & chic concept! Congratulations and keep going! Thanks for all the tips!
You are MUCH too sweet Tamara!!! Thank you SO, SO much!!!
Kristi! This looks amazing. I love your table, but all of the details of the entire space came together just beautifully. I’ve been working on my outdoor space too and this was just the motivation I needed to get it finished. You are going to love it all summer!
Thanks SO much Corey!!! I’m really happy with how it all came together and I’m thrilled that it’s inspired you to finish up your own space!

Oh. My. God. That view is to die for!! I used to live in Colorado and miss the mountains SO much! Beautiful patio to look out over your beautiful view. Great job!
Thank you so, so much Kayla!!! We feel so very lucky to be living in this gorgeous little town with so much to do just outside our front door! Though we love it here in the Kootenays, we grew up near the Rockies and I’m not sure anything can compare to them!
Everything about this outdoor space is just absolutely beautiful! This post is filled with eye candy and I don’t even know where to begin! Thanks for sharing it over at The Makers 🙂
Your deck came out absolutely gorgeous! I love each and every detail, and your table looks amazing out there! I will admit that I made a nasty face when I read about your “cold summer nights.” We don’t get those here in Arizona. Our cold summer nights are in the 90s;)
Hahaha! Yes, living in Arizona would be a MUCH different climate than living in the mountains in Canada, though to be honest, living in Southern British Columbia is SO MUCH warmer than where I grew up in Northern Alberta!!! Thank you so much for your kind words about the makeover … I’m really happy with how it all came together!
Very pretty!
Thank you!
I love everything about this! You did a great job Krisit!
Thank you SO much Tara!!! I’m absolutely thrilled with how it all came together!

Thats quite funny to hear, you can’t move in the UK for solar powered lights they are genuinely in EVERY shop!
SO strange! I’ve been searching high and low for solar powered string lights, but haven’t come across any for a price I am willing to pay yet.
It turned out so adorable. I love the rug! Thanks for sharing at the Bloggers Brag Pinterest Party.
Thank you Kim! We’re thrilled with how it all came together!

Thank you SO much Jennifer! It’s been wonderful to have a space to sit outside and enjoy the summer now! Wishing you a fabulous week!
Just found “you” at Thistlekeeping…will check in regularly from now on…just wondering if you have trouble with rain collecting on your cute ladder shelves? Enjoy your warm summer weather, snow is just around the corner!
Thank you SO much for popping by Linda! We keep our ladder shelf tucked in a corner under an overhang so, though it does get some rain, it doesn’t usually amount to much and everything dries up pretty quickly 😉 Yes, our nights are getting cooler and Fall is definitely on it’s way soon! Enjoy the rest of your week Linda!
Such a beautiful makeover – no wonder you’re so chuffed. The table and benches are pure work of art with skill and attention built right in. And I know what you mean about IKEA! The colour of your ladder rack so caught my eye and pulled me right in. It is gorgeous. Totally inspirational. Cath x
Thank you SO, SO much Catherine! I’m absolutely in love with how it all came together!!!

Awwwwm thank you Rachel!!! I’m glad it made such an impression! I’m definitely missing this space, but can’t wait to recreate it in our new home!!!
Simply GORGEOUS! The table makes me drool and the ladder shelf makes me swoon. Your choice of colors is very relaxing and cheery all at once, but the details steal the show. Did you ever build the side bar? I just found your blog link on DIYShowOff and you now have a new fan. Can’t wait to peruse your blog for more goodies and inspiration. 😀
Thank you SO much Stacy for your sweet comment! I am still very much in love with this space and cannot wait to re-create it in our new home this Summer! We didn’t actually get to the bar table, but it’s still on my wish list 😉 I’m absolutely thrilled that you love it and I hope you find a ton of other projects to love on as well!!!
It’s gorgeous! I think my favorite parts are the diy ladder shelf and the view 🙂
Thanks Rosy! I’m definitely missing this space since with Summer just around the corner, but we’re hoping to recreate it in our new home soon!!!
Y’all are so talented to be able to make your own table. I love it. It looks so complex too. I am also loving the painted bamboo plates. That adds just the right amount of color and can be personalized for your own decor too. Talk about a beautiful rug. Man you out did yourself.
Thank you Bethany! I really do have to give all of the credit to my amazing husband on that one! The plates were so super easy and can totally be customized for any space! Thanks again girl!

Your deck looks great and perfect for entertaining. The table and benches are an awesome diy. We just sold our aluminum patio set this weekend and I’m using my old farmhouse table for our patio. I would love to make a bench for seating. The colours you chose are very pretty and what a view!
Thank you SO much Elizabeth! How perfect that you have an old farmhouse table!!! I think it would look wonderful with a bench on either side! How lovely!!!
This space is STUNNING, Kristi! And that view is amazing. I really love your rug! I’m sure you will make a beautiful outdoor area in your new place.
