Checking in with our 2024 Renovation Goals

There’s little I love more than setting new goals and putting together a well thought out to-do list to help get me there. I’m definitely a planner at heart and, while the holidays will forever be my favourite time of year, the fresh start that January brings each year might just be a close second place. I’ve already set several personal goals for myself for the year ahead (let me know if you’d like to hear more about those!) and now it’s time to put some thought into what we might like to accomplish around this house in 2025. Like setting personal goals, setting renovation goals helps us to not only evaluate our needs and target our renovation time and budget to what matters most for us right now, but it also helps us to stay the course when other ideas inevitably pop up through the year. Plus, it’s so fun to dream up all the ideas.

But, before I we can really dive into our renovation goals for the year ahead, I always find it helpful to revisit last year’s goals – what worked, what didn’t and where we may choose to change course for 2025. And so, today, I’m sharing a quick check in with last year’s renovation goals.

Looking back at our 2024 renovation goals

ONE: Finish the Study – โœ”๏ธ

At this point last year, we were just getting started on replacing the fireplace tile, installing carpet and replacing the furniture in our Study. We had this space all finished up by the time Spring rolled in and we’re still so happy with it!

TWO: Replace the flooring on our stairs – โœ”๏ธ

We had the flooring replaced on both of our staircases at the same time as replacing the carpet in our study. We went with a classic wool carpet and we absolutely love it! It’s been such a game changer for both the look and feel of both staircases.

THREE: Finish our Primary Bedroom – โœ”๏ธ

You can see the renovation was in full swing last Spring in that stair photo above – the doorway to the old bedroom was being framed in so we could claim the space for our new walk in closet. Today, that doorway has disappeared entirely and our primary bedroom renovation is officially complete. The goal was to be sleeping in here before 2024 was through and I’m happy to report we made it (with only a few weeks to spare)! While we’re still waiting on a few pieces of furniture, we’re SO incredibly happy with the way this space turned out! You can catch the first look at our bedroom space here, but watch for a full reveal post coming soon.

FOUR: Finish our Ensuite Bath – โœ”๏ธ

This was by far the biggest renovation we’ve ever taken on – moving walls and plumbing all while working around the in-floor heating that is original to this house. We not only increased the footprint of this space, but we relocated each and every piece to create a bigger ensuite that will function so much better for Brady and I. This room was truly a labour of love and I am so darn proud of how it’s all come together in the end! I have so much to share about this space (including a full reveal), but for now, here’s a little sneak peek.

FIVE: Build out our primary closet – nearly there!

We are so darn close with this one – the floors, doors and trim are in and we’ve got the bones of the closet system all built and installed in place. All that’s left is adding a bit of trim to give this puppy more of a built-in look and we’ll be able to call this one DONE too!

SIX: Create a new bedroom for Carson – ๐—ซ

We’re relatively close with this one too, especially considering where we started. The new walls are all built and drywall is done. It might look far from done yet, but with just floors, doors and trim left to go, this space feels all but done for us, or nearly there anyway.

SEVEN: New flooring throughout the second floor – ๐—ซ

Again, not totally done this one, but the flooring is here (you can see it all stacked in the photo above!), we just need to get it all installed. Hoping this will be done before Spring rolls in.

EIGHT: The pyramid room bath – ๐—ซ

This one was more of a wish list item, a place to go next if we managed to get through the rest. Not surprised we didn’t with the scope of the other four rooms we’d taken on, but thinking there’s a good chance this one way transfer to our 2025 list.

Wow! I have to say, progress can feel pretty slow at times when you’re living through a renovation, but looking back at this list, we managed to accomplish the majority of our goals and most of the others are just a few months away from completion too. It feels so much better when you’re looking back at how far you’ve come rather than how far you’ve still got to go. That said, we do still have a loooooong way to go around here, with more ideas than time of course, which means they’ll be another list coming our way for the year ahead. Stay tuned my friends!
