Sharing our renovation plans for the year ahead.

I don’t know about you, but around here, a new year always brings a lot of reflection and attention on our values and goals for the year ahead. Brady and I always take some time to chat through all of our personal, financial, home and family goals for the year ahead – throwing all of our hopes and dreams for the year out into the world (with a whole lot of family adventures currently sitting at the very top of our wish list). It’s really important to us both that we are on the same page with what we want to spend our time and energy on through the year ahead. I love sharing our home goals here on the blog – it’s not only a fun way to bring you all along for the ride, but it’s also my favourite way to check back in with our progress along the way.
Last week I shared a list of quick & easy projects that we’re hoping to tackle through the coming months – relatively simple ideas that won’t require too much work. But, I’m sure it’s no surprise that we’ve got several bigger renovation projects up our sleeve this year too. Here’s to a year full of BIG change, adventure, & growth!
Our 2023 Renovation List
ONE: Our Primary Bedroom

At the very top of our list this year is creating our new primary bedroom. This room itself won’t actually see a ton of change – some new flooring, trim, lighting, window coverings, and probably some sort of panelling or wallpaper on the walls. I mean that’s not nothing I suppose, but compared to the other spaces on our list, this one will be a relatively easy space to transform. Of course, the spaces attached to it are a whole other story and the renovation plans for those are absolutely spilling into our primary bedroom space (more on that below!).
TWO: Our Primary Closet

Originally, we’d planned to just rework the existing closet and bathroom spaces (they were combined in one room), but it didn’t take long for us to come up with an idea far more exciting… we’re going to add a doorway through this wall of our bedroom to a brand new closet space on the other side. To create this new closet, we’ll steal some space from the double-bedroom on the other side (it’s a long story, but you can catch up with it here if you’re curious about why we have a “double-bedroom”, just scroll down past the red bathroom). You can see where our future closet will be in the photo below – super pumped to have that beautiful window in there!

THREE: Ensuite Bathroom

I’m sure looking at these photos, you’re wondering why we’d ever want to change this (right?!). Words can’t even describe how gross that bathroom carpet was – in fact, we ripped every inch of this out just a couple of weeks after moving in and for the last few months, it’s looked like this (a HUGE improvement already if you ask me!).

This, my friends, will be our future ensuite. I can’t tell you how excited I am about our plans for this space – an enclosed water closet, big shower, double vanity AND, best of all, my very own bathtub! I cannot wait to create this space!
FOUR: Carson’s Bedroom

Carson is SO excited to design his own room! He’s come up with some really cool ideas for this space – think built-in bed, lots of little shelves & cubbies and even a secret little nook. It’s been so fun to talk through everything with him and I cannot wait to see how this space evolves.
FIVE: The Flooring Upstairs

Since we’ll be doing the flooring in our primary bedroom and Carson’s room, we might as well lay all the flooring throughout our entire upper floor. So, aside from the bathrooms, we’re planning to lay and engineered hardwood through all of the bedrooms, hallway and pyramid room up here.
SIX: Flooring on the Stairs

The flooring on our staircases is probably one of the things I hate most in this house (yes, even more than that red bathroom!). The metal end caps feel sharp on your feet and they fall away from the stairs, pinching your feet as you step on them. Even more, the rock on the risers doesn’t just look awful, it’s actually cut holes in a few socks to boot. We’ve talked about a few different options for these stairs, but I think we’ve landed on a quality wool carpet that will make these stairs a little safer to walk down and hopefully stand up to the traffic of walking up and down them on a regular basis.
SEVEN: Just a bit of Landscaping

Okay, both the front and back yards here need A TON of work. It’s a lot. We’re not planning to take on everything this year, but we would love to get a start on things at least. I’m thinking some trees and bushes to start with at the very least. I honestly haven’t put much thought into any of this yet, but it’s definitely on our radar to start chipping away at this summer.
EIGHT: The Pyramid Room Bathroom

This is a room we rarely even set foot in, so it might seem like an odd choice to tackle in our first year here, but hear me out. I am desperate to get rid of that red bathroom (you can see that in our home tour here – it’s SO bad!), but before we can tackle that monstrosity, we need to make sure Carson has a bathroom he can use through that renovation. This bathroom space off of the pyramid room (it’s what we call the bonus space above our garage) might be little, but with a toilet, shower and a decent sized vanity, it will work perfectly for C while his bathroom is under construction.
While we’ve got a ton more work to do around here, I feel like this list is a really good start. Of course, there’s always a chance we’ll change course along the way, but this is our best guess about what we’ll be able to tackle through the year ahead.
What about you – do you have any fun house projects planned for the year ahead? I’d love to hear what you’re working on in the comments below!
Wishing you SUCH a lovely day my friends!Â

We downsized last year moving from Edmotnon to a smaller home with a much much larger yard. Unfortunately loved the yard and spent a whole year renovating the house. I don’t envy your all that dust, but you new huge home is breathtaking I look forward to seeing the changes.
Awwww, thanks so much Leanna! I can very much relate to all the hard work you must have put in, but I have no doubt it was worth it! And a large yard is exactly why we chose to move too – it’s such a wonderful thing to have that outdoor space to enjoy!
