Ribbon is inexpensive, readily available, and available in any colour imaginable, which makes it the perfect accessory to your holiday decor. There are so many simple ways to put a bit of ribbon to work around your home through the holidays, I can’t wait to show you some of my favourites!
Ribbon has long been my secret weapon through all of my holiday decorating. It’s inexpensive, easy to source and comes in an infinite variation of colours, sizes and textures, making it the simplest way to add to or change up your holiday decor.
Case in point: Though I’ve always stuck with some variation of holiday plaids throughout our home during the holidays, swapping out ribbon colours has been my favourite way to change up the look and feel of our home each holiday season. I’ve played around with various reds, blacks, creams and even greens – adding in those little touches of ribbon always brings fresh take to our old tried + true holiday decor pieces.
This year, I found myself craving an even bigger change – hoping to change up the general colour scheme around our home in a bigger way. And, while I did purchase a few new ornaments for our tree, for the most part, I pulled off a whole holiday new colour palette with the help of a few new spools of ribbon (you can find the ribbons I used here).
There are definitely some more obvious ways to put ribbon to work in your holiday decor – things like bows on wreaths or ribbon ties for your tree ornaments, but there are SO many more ways that you can utilize a bit of ribbon to dress up those everyday pieces you already have scattered around your home and today, I can’t wait to share several of my favourites with you.
Let’s start with some of the more obvious, shall we?
On & around the tree.
Whether it’s to hold up ornaments or just some simple bows tied around the branches, adding a bit of ribbon to your tree is an easy way to layer in some different colours and textures. Another easy one, tying up your gifts with some beautiful ribbons of different colours, textures and sizes.
Using ribbon to hang wreaths.
Whether big or small, adding a bit of ribbon to your wreaths is an easy way to dress them up and bring in a bit of colour. Sometimes I just add a simple little bow like on our pantry wreath above, or sometimes I leave some longer tails that trail the colour and texture down in a more dramatic way. Instead of using the same ribbon throughout our home, this year I took the opportunity to bring in various colours and textures (though all very classic and neutral). I love the collected feel it’s brought to our otherwise more plain holiday decor.
Note: Did you spot that bit of ribbon tied to our dining room light?
Speaking of tying ribbon to lights…
Add lengths of ribbon to various lights around your home – wall lights, chandeliers, candles and even lamps.
Tying your garlands with bits of ribbon is another easy way to layer in some different colours and textures (plus it helps to hide the velcro I use to hang our stair garland!). I love to layer in different ribbons and make big old bows that hang in the most dramatic way. It’s such a simple way to dress up a plain old garland!
I always add some ribbon to the garlands around our doorways and over our fireplace mantels too.
Add ribbon to your mantel.
Just in this little corner of our living room you can spot several different ways I’ve put some ribbon to work – a bow in the corner to hold the jingle bells woven into our our garland, a little piece hanging from each stocking, another tied to the lantern on the hearth, yet another over the little bell set atop the mantel, and finally a bit of extra tied over that little gold wreath hanging over the mirror. Simple little touches, but they all add up so beautifully.
Tie some ribbon to your Christmas bells.
I’ve got little bells and ornaments scattered all around our home through the holidays. They often come tied with a length of jute string, but I think swapping that out for a bit of ribbon really elevates the look to a whole new level. You can see the difference in the photos below.
Tie some ribbon around a vase.
I put three different ribbons to work in this little corner, but I love the way it adds bit of colour and texture, making one of my favourite views in our home look extra special through the holidays.
Finally, hang some ribbon from your wall decor.
It’s SO simple, but just by tying a bit of ribbon to the handle, this collection of woven trivets hanging in our dining room suddenly feels so much more festive, don’t you think?
Are you feeling inspired to add a bit of ribbon to your holiday decor?
