Turn your scrap wood into beautiful wall decor with this DIY Monogram!
Hello friends!
Welcome to another #MonthlyDIYChallenge! Y’all know how much fun I have teaming up with my talented bloggy friends the first Wednesday of each month to see the different ideas we can come up with from the very same starting point!
This month we’re having some fun with {1×2’s} and I cannot wait to see what everyone came up with!
I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone that renovating our home leaves us with no shortage of scrap wood. In fact, all that leftover wood is very quickly taking over our garage. Pretty valuable space through this cold Alberta Winter for sure! Obviously, we’re going to need to figure out some sort of storage and organization for it all here soon (hubs has been dreaming up a total garage makeover for months now!), but in the mean time, I’m hoping to find some creative ways to put some of that wood to work.
So, when 1×2’s popped up as an idea for a challenge theme, you can bet I jumped on board wholeheartedly. A perfect opportunity to whittle down our lumber pile a bit and of course make something fabulous at the same time!
I actually had an idea for a project right from the get-go, which to be honest, is hardly ever the case. Truth is, our monthly challenge tends to be just that – I always find it quite difficult to come up with something that we can actually use in our home.
Not so this month!
I knew instantly that I wanted to create some rustic art for our dining wall with this DIY monogram.
So here’s what you need to know to make your own DIY monogram:
We started by cutting a piece of thin MDF into a 1.5 foot square (we happened to have 1/8 inch on hand, but really any thin plywood would work). Then, we chopped down our 1×2’s into 1.5 foot lengths until we had enough to cover our MDF square.
Using some wood glue, we attached our 1×2 lengths to the front of MDF square, laying one right beside the next until the entire square was lined with wood. We also chose to add a few staples through the back of each board just to be sure everything was secure.
Finally, using a pencil tied to a string, which had been nailed to the centre of our square (things can get pretty technical around here!), we drew a circle just inside the edges of our square.
While I had that pencil out, I also traced an M into the centre of my circle (I used a decorative M block I happened to have, but you could just as easily print one out on paper to trace).
With everything marked, I pulled out our handy jigsaw to cut it all out, taking care to follow the lines I had drawn.
Finally, I finished it all off with a bit stain and paint (just whatever I had on hand already) – switching colours with each new board.
I gave it all a quick once over with our palm sander to soften the edges and rough the paint up just a bit.
And friends, I’m totally over the moon with how it all turned out!!!
I think it looks absolutely perfect in our new farmhouse style dining space!
Now, don’t forget to check out the fabulous projects that my bloggy friends created for this month’s challenge too!
Wishing you SUCH a lovely day!
