Honestly, it’s hard to believe it’s been just four months since we first moved into this new/old home of ours. I’m not sure if it’s the three straight months of painting or just that the house is now full of all things Christmas, but somewhere along the way, this old house started to feel like home for us once again. Sure, we’re still sleeping in temporary bedroom spaces, the primary bedroom is nothing but 2×4 framing and plywood floors and our beautiful spiral staircase is still the bane of my existence thanks to that truly awful mix of ugly flooring, metal end caps that dig into your feet when you step on them and a rock covered riser that has taken down more than it’s fair share of socks around here. Buuuut, despite all of that (and so much more that has popped up along the way), we really love it here. While renovation progress has felt slower than slow (especially this past month as we focused more on building the backyard rink and enjoying the holiday season), we’ve certainly made some big changes around here in just four short months. Let me show you…
When we first moved into this house, I shared a list of things I was planning to tackle right away and, while I haven’t managed to make my way through the whole list just yet, I’m happy to report that we’re well on our way at least. Each and every room on our main floor has been painted – every single wall and ceiling. I’ve also painted all of the upstairs spaces as well, aside from the ones that are slated for some major renovations early in the new year (our primary bedroom, the room that will become Carson’s bedroom and the red bathroom – you can tour it all here if you missed it). I shared before & after photos of each of those spaces in my last update post back in October. Since then, I finished up the last of the painting on our main floor, adding a bit of colour to our front study and the little office off of our main living room – wait till you see it!!!
Let’s start with the office, which I painted out in the most soft and lovely brown. On a whim, I went with Chocolate Velvet from Benjamin Moore in here and it turned out to be the most beautiful, rich, velvety brown colour. I love the way it pairs with all of the different wood tones in there. It honestly couldn’t have turned out more perfectly!

I also went with a very rich feeling brown colour in our front study as well, although it’s far more dark and dramatic for sure. The colour I chose was Black Fox from Sherwin Williams and, though it’s a deep brown colour, it definitely reads more charcoal in this space. I absolutely LOVE the way it pops against all of the oak in here. I’m not sure I’ve ever loved a paint colour more!

In addition to all of the painting, I’ve added a few new rugs around the house – not only do they bring some coziness to each space, but they sure do a good job of helping to draw attention away from all of the ugly floors we’ve got around here.

I love the way this new rug defines our dining area – it’s neutral, so will go with anything, but adds a bold, fun pattern. Plus, it’s good quality, 100% wool for a great price!
While rug shopping, I came across this beauty as well and couldn’t resist ordering up the biggest size I could get my hands on to help hide those very bold, orange toned floors in our living room – they’re by far my least favourite in the house (also found on the stairs I mentioned above of course too). While it doesn’t hide them completely, it sure does help – at least it will tide me over until we can change them out for hardwood down the road. I love how soft and cozy it feels in here, it’s the perfect living room rug!

While I was busy painting and decorating away inside the house, Brady and Carson have been hard at work outside, building a skating rink in the backyard. They’ve got everything all framed in, the edges all packed down and the snow all cleared away – all that’s left to do out here is flood the ice now and it’ll be ready to play hockey. Brady’s got the fence and trees all decked out with Christmas lights and plans to haul our fire pit over as well – it’s going to be such a magical backyard space to enjoy all winter long.

Aside from decorating for the holidays, that’s about it for changes around here my friends. I’m hoping to share a holiday home tour with you soon, but in the mean time, I hope you can find some inspiration in all of the sneak peeks I shared in today’s post.

Wishing you SUCH a lovely day my friends!ย

I have never been a fan of dark paint before. But your rooms are absolutely gorgeous! I always thought dark paint would swallow wood tones in my rooms (which I love), but your’s enhance your wood, and it sure is lovely!
Thanks so much Lynne! I never would have expected I’d turn into someone that loves dark paint either, but I’m so glad I took the leap to try it – it turned out even better than I’d imagined it!
WOW…Everythihng looks GORGEOUS!
Thanks so much Lori! It’s definitely feeling more like home for us.
