How to create a cozy + welcoming entryway.

Happy Saturday friends! It feels like it’s been ages since I’ve had a chance to sit down to write and even longer since I’ve been able to take part in this cozy living series with my blog friends. The first Saturday of every month we like to team up to share all sorts of cozy inspiration and, while I’ve missed the last several months, I’m SO happy to be taking part again this month! I cannot wait to see the cozy ideas they have to share, but first, I wanted to share a few updates I’ve made around our entryway.

Not only does our entryway offer the first impression when someone enters our home, but because of our open-concept layout, that impression lives on. Our entryway is easily visible from our main living room, kitchen and even our dining space, which just means it’s extra important to ensure our entryway feels welcoming and cozy.
While I don’t think our entryway has ever felt unwelcoming (you can see more photos of our old entryway here), I do think my style has evolved these last few years to a cozier, more collected feel and I wanted this first impression of our home to better reflect that.

And so, a few months ago (has it really been THAT long?!) I started the transformation of this little corner by refinishing that beautiful antique dresser, swapping out the black paint for the warmer wood tones hiding underneath (you can read more about that here). Just that one little change made such a big difference, bringing so much warmth and character to our little entry.

I especially love how the mid-toned wood plays with the lighter wood floors and railing – I think it’s what adds that touch of character and charm, bringing a more collected feel to the space. On top, I swapped out the lamp with something that brought just a touch more personality. I like that it brings some of the warm brass tones from our living room into this little corner too.

I also couldn’t resist a cute little brass frame on top of the dresser as well and, to keep things from looking too traditional, I added a fun little textured concrete box to drop our keys into too.

While I ditched the black colour from the dresser, I couldn’t resist bringing it back in with the rug. I think the design leans a little more traditional (which I LOVE) and the dark colour helps to define this open space, in a really dramatic, yet grounding way. Plus, it’s WASHABLE! With our snowy winters and slushy spring weather, that’s pretty huge around here.

I still can’t believe how just a few simple swaps completely transformed the feel of this little entryway. I just love the cozy, collected feel in here now and I think it plays so well with the other cozy little updates we’ve slowly been working into the rest of our home these past few months too. I cannot wait to share them with you!

What a darling spot, I have that same dresser that’s in need of a makeover and your’s is great inspiration. Also what a brilliant way to add the artwork in the stair corner. I really like that look. Have a wonderful weekend!
Thanks so much Dawn! Wishing you a wonderful weekend as well my friend!
So glad to have you back for Cozy Living Saturday! I never noticed your ceiling was ship lapped. It looks great and I love your light fixture. It’s nice to get a fresh look with just a few changes. Like you, I’ve been leaning more toward wood pieces than painted. I’m getting ready to strip a vintage mirror. Your dresser is motivating me to get it done sooner rather than later. It’s gorgeous.
Nice to see you this month! What a pretty spot to enter your home. Love that rug…and that it’s washable.
