How to give any old tray some lovely farmhouse style in just minutes!
I’m sure y’all have heard the big news by now … Wayfair has made it’s way north of the border to Canada! Which means we Canucks can now shop their gorgeous decor without paying an arm and a leg to ship it all the way up here to Timbuktu.
Being the HUGE Wayfair fan that I am (seriously, they have the best selection of practically everything for your home), you better believe I jumped at the chance to team up with them for their #DIYMyWay serving tray challenge!
I had BIG plans for this plain old serving tray…
But then Fed-Ex somehow lost it along the way. And of course, didn’t bother to tell anyone. Ugh.
So, by the time my second tray finally made its way here (six long weeks later than it was supposed to), I was left having to turn those big plans into something a bit more simple and a lot faster to execute.
And so, the easiest ever DIY farmhouse style tray was born…
I started with a quick coat of my favourite white paint, which gave me a nice clean backdrop…
But you know I couldn’t resist dressing things up a bit! I’ve been holding onto this gorgeous wrapping paper for ages now and was SO excited to finally have a chance to put it to work!
I measured the base of my tray and cut out a piece of this pretty paper to size. Then, after giving the base of my tray a nice thick coat of Mod Podge (I like the matte finish best), I simply placed my paper into the gooey mess I’d just created. Finally, I used a credit card to carefully smooth out all of the wrinkles, working from the centre out towards the edges. And, after letting everything dry for a half hour or so, I was left with this…
I had planned to use this pretty tray to serve breakfast in bed on…
But really, who am I kidding?!
I think I could make good use of it in my new office space. That lovely green paper matches perfectly with my newly painted cabinet (you’ll have to pop over to my Insta feed to see for yourself)!
I can’t wait to show you how I plan to put it to work in the finished space (here’s hoping it’s soon)! But, in the mean time, check out how the space is coming along:
Wishing you SUCH a lovely day friends!
LOVE this, Kristi!! Such a simple DIY and adds so much farmhouse style and character.
Thanks so much Sarah! SO simple, but I love it!
I love this!! What a genius idea to use wrapping paper! Did you put more mod podge on top of the wrapping paper or just the underside?
Thank you so, so much! I’m thrilled that you love it! I didn’t put more modpodge on top as it soaked through the wrapping paper pretty well, but if you really wanted to be thorough, you could definitely add another coat on top.
Kristi! What a neat idea! In the past, I have used wallpaper on a few wicker trays. However, I am going to try your method next time!
Also, I agree with you — I just love shopping at Wayfair! They have such lovely things at great prices! It’s great to have them in Canada now! Another favourite place is Kirkland’s but they are not in Canada yet! Hopefully, they also will set up shop here in Canada! Their country décor is really neat, too — and very reasonable! Do lots of damage to the credit card when we winter down south!
Have a great rest of the day, Kristi!
Oh thank you Mary-Ann! I’m SO happy you’re feeling inspired!!! Kirkland’s is definitely another great US shop that I’d love to see up here as well! We used to live just next to the border and travelled down to Spokane to do all of our shopping on the regular – Hobby Lobby is one that I very much miss too! Will have to send you with a shopping list when you head down south next. 😉
I love how this turned out! Thanks for sharing at Work it Wednesday.
Thanks so much Angela!!!
Love trays and can never have too many! Yours is beautiful Kristi! Love the paper you used!
Thank you so, so much sweet friend!
You did a great job with such little time. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so, so much Donna!

Thanks so much Edye!!!
Glad you can buy Wayfair stuff easily now, despite Fed-Ex didn’t make it easy. I’m a huge fan of wrapping paper is the one you chose is so delicate, perfect for your farmhouse style tray!
Thank you so, so much Pili! I’m so excited to be able to shop all those fab finds here in Canada now too!
