All of the projects we’re hoping to tackle this Summer.
With the last of our snow slowly melting away, we’ve had all things Summer on the brain. We’re SO looking forward to getting back into all of our favourite Summer activities – mountain biking, paddle boarding, curling up in the shade with a good book, and I’m especially excited to get my hands dirty in the garden again this year. Of course, it can’t all be fun & games around here! We’ve got a loooooong list of projects we’d like to work through this Summer too – scroll through to check out all of our Summer project plans.
Summer 2021 Project List
ONE: Build a garage.
Building a new garage out back is at the top of our to-do list this Summer. Not only has adding an extra two-car garage has been on our wish-list for years now, but since breaking ground to run the utilities to the build site last Summer, we’ve been living with a giant mud pit across half of our backyard and I’m beyond ready to get that mess out of there. I’m not exactly sure how far we’ll get with this build project this year (we’re still working on the plans now), but we’re definitely eager to get started!
TWO. Finish the gazebo roof.
I haven’t talked much about this one here on the blog, but late last Fall Brady built a little 10 x 12 gazebo structure beside the house to sit over (and keep the snow off of) our new hot tub. It was so late in the year when we got started with this one though, that we didn’t quite get it finished before Winter rolled in. Though we managed to get the concrete poured and the main structure up, we weren’t able to finish off the roof. So, early this Summer, we’re planning to finish it off with some cedar shakes and maybe even get a bit of landscaping in around it.
THREE: Finish the base of our deck.
Speaking of projects we weren’t able to finish before Winter, our new deck would also fall onto this list. Though it’s super close to being done, we still have some skirting to put around the base, a few sets of stairs to build and some stain to apply to it all. If you read about our covered deck plans last Fall, you’ll already know that this base is just the first phase of what is going to be a very extensive build. Though we’ve already finalized the build plans with an engineer, we likely won’t get to building out the new roof structure until next year.
FOUR: Set up the “bunk bed room”.
When I first shared our renovation wish-list for this year, I mentioned that we had plans to create a fun new guest room for Carson to host his cousins and friends for sleepovers (since dubbed “the bunk bed room“). In a way, we’ve already started on this with a switch of bedroom spaces to accommodate the two new sets of bunk beds (and the large amount of space they take up) – we’ve moved Carson into a new bedroom bedroom space, freeing up our biggest bedroom (aside from our own anyway) for the bunk beds.
Before we get the bunk beds set up in their new home (Carson’s old room), I want to paint a more neutral colour over the deep green and maybe even over the wood shiplap – what do you think?
I’d also love to add a little wall mounted reading lamp over each bed.
FIVE: Set up the new guest room.
This one was also mentioned on our 2021 Renovation List. With the office moved downstairs to our old back living room on the main floor, we’ve got an extra bedroom upstairs sitting totally empty (or it will be anyway once the bunkbeds find their new home – it’s actually a bit of a disaster at the moment). We’re still not entirely sure what we want to do with this extra space, but for now we’ve decided to pop our extra double bed in here and call it another guest room.
SIX: Keep plugging along in Carson’s new bedroom.
This little modern cottage themed bedroom has been months in the making already. Though we’ve made some great (albeit slow) progress in here, I’m eager to start bringing in some decor. It’s the little details like artwork, lamps & curtains that are really going to make this space shine!
SEVEN: A few little updates around our main floor.
A few months ago, I wrote a post about how I feel my decor style is shifting. At the time, I was feeling very torn about just where exactly things were going, but I knew some change was coming. I’m still not super clear about what my new style is (some sort of combo of modern cottage with a California eclectic), but what I do know is how I want our home to feel – collected & cozy are the two words that come to mind most for me. With this in mind, I’ve got a few decor changes planned for around our main floor – just a few things to bring a little more character and personality into our main living spaces (I’ll share more about this with y’all next week!).
Whew! As you can see, we’ve got a busy Summer ahead of us. Honestly, if we can make it through even half of this, I’ll be a happy camper! What about you – any big projects planned for the Summer ahead? Tell me about them in the comments below.
Wishing you SUCH a lovely day my friends!
