One Room Challenge {Week Six}: A Farmhouse Master Bedroom

Hello friends!!!

It’s a beautiful day for a room reveal, don’t ya think?

Six very short weeks ago we signed on to take part in the One Room Challenge, pledging to makeover one room in our home in just, you guessed it, six weeks. Let me tell you, with an entire house in need of a major overhaul, we had no shortage of rooms to choose from. There have been talks about making over our kitchen or our guest bathroom next, but honestly, I had my heart set on creating a lovely, relaxing, farmhouse style master bedroom right from the start.

So, with visions of wood, lace, and all things rustic & neutral, we got to work planning out our Farmhouse Style Master Bedroom.

I wish I could plead ignorance about the mess I’d signed us up for, but since we actually took part for the first time last Spring, creating a rustic, cabin themed bedroom for our not-so-little guy, I knew exactly what I was getting myself (and everyone around me) into. Truth is, it’s six weeks of chaos, stress and never, ever sitting down. You’re head just overflows with ideas and spins with the stress of trying to make them all happen within that tight deadline. You wonder a million times over why you ever thought making over an entire room in just six weeks was a good idea.

And then suddenly, six weeks have passed, you look over at your finished space and realize it was all worth it.

This beautiful new space was worth every long day’s work, every minute we spent carefully planning, every project that took ten times longer than it should have, every doubt we had about whether we’d just wasted the last 20 hours on an absolute disaster, every late night, every hour we spent looking for the PERFECT curtain rod or bed frame …

Every single, stressful thing brought us to this moment. And, it turns out it was ALL worth it! (Thank goodness!!!)

This One Room Challenge may have only been six weeks long, but my friends, I’ve been waiting ages for this gorgeous master bedroom reveal …

This makeover was no small feat, we changed every single surface in this room (aside from those beautiful hardwood floors) and did it all within that tight six week timeline.

A fresh coat of white paint over EVERYTHING really brightened things up and the new farmhouse style trim totally transformed the look of the entire room.

Even with it’s muted colours, this stencilled wall adds a ton of visual interest to the space (will definitely be sharing a tutorial for it soon!).

This gorgeous farmhouse style chandelier couldn’t have fit our design or space more perfectly …

Our antique dresser got a much needed update …

And of course, so did the matching bedside tables …

And really, what bedroom would be complete without the most luxurious and cozy bed?

This bedding is positively heavenly! It’s SO soft and the lovely frills fit our farmhouse style perfectly!

I looked everywhere, but couldn’t find a set of curtains that matched the simple style I had been picturing in my head, so I made them instead. I found the most perfect linen to make them with & even lined them with a fabric blacks out our room, but adds a bit of weight and drape to the curtains. I also couldn’t resist adding a bit of lace with some simple sheers in behind.

We’ve got a pair of vintage chairs that used to belong to Brady’s grandparents – we had them recovered a few years ago and they’ve been my very favourite ever since.

I’ve always wanted a fireplace in our bedroom, so you can imagine how excited I was when hubs helped me make this

Doesn’t it look so pretty styled with all sorts of lovely farmhouse treasures (check out my fireplace styling tips here)?

We also made this pretty DIY Trumeau Mirror (though that was a few months ago, thank goodness!) …

And it’s no surprise that I fell head-over-heels in love with this lovely round jute rug

I absolutely adore every part of this space, but I think my absolute favourite parts of our new master bedroom would have to be our beautiful vintage closet doors …

Complete with vintage hardware …

And our incredible rustic planked ceiling, which took us weeks to figure out – and a VERY LONG weekend to put up and paint – (can’t wait to share that tutorial soon!) …

Our tight timeline obviously posed more than it’s fair share of challenges, but somehow, everything came together beautifully! We’re still waiting on our black double curtain rod, which will draw a bit more attention to our lovely curtains and farmhouse trim I think. And unfortunately, our new doorknobs are stuck at the border still waiting to clear customs. The matte black colour and vintage style are going to make SUCH a difference to the look of our space (goodbye copper and silver knobs older than I am!), so I’ll be sure to share pictures on Instagram once they arrive!

Honestly friends, I’m still in awe at everything we were able to accomplish! I owe a huge thanks to my family and friends for helping out with projects and looking after out little guy while we worked our way through the longest to-do list ever!

With so many moments of doubt through this makeover, I cannot believe we pulled this thing off. These last six weeks may have been some of the most stressful of my life, but my friends, I couldn’t possibly be more in love with how it all came together!!!

Now that you’ve seen our new master bedroom, I bet you are dying to know how we put it all together! We planned it all with the help of the most amazing site – Itsums. Seriously, I can’t help but shout from the rooftops how much I loved using it! Not only is it a brilliant place to keep track of each element and idea along the way, but it’s also got the most handy budget tracker because, well let’s face it, our budget wasn’t exactly limitless. I simply set my budget and Itsums did the rest, keeping track of how much my (crazy long) list of items would cost and automatically tracking the money spent as I marked each item as “purchased”. It even let me “hide” items from my budget that I wasn’t quite sure about or that were sponsored by companies, giving me a true and real picture of exactly what this room was costing us. I’m telling you, it really is the most BRILLIANT way to plan & shop for anything! We definitely plan on putting it to work as we make our way through the rest of the house.

The BEST way to plan any project and keep track of your budget!

For links to all of my sources as well as a look at our budget, just hop on over to my Master Bedroom board.

I also want to give one last shout out to the wonderful companies that helped me create the farmhouse style master bedroom of my dreams!

Itsums | Schlage | 1STOPlighting | Rugs USA | Royal Design Studio
Tonic Living | Crane & Canopy | Birch Lane

And of course, SUCH a big thank you to you all for your support and encouragement along the way!!!

    1. You are so, so sweet Patty! Thank you! It was a ton of work, especially having to complete it all at the very last minute, but it was so worth it – that ceiling adds so much character to the room! It definitely puts a smile on my face every time I walk into it! xo

    Nellie

    1. Thank you SO, SO much for your sweet comment Nellie! We really couldn’t be happier with how it all came together! And even better, that we were able to pull it off in the six week timeline! Thanks again!!!

  20. Pretty is the operative word, but without being so sweet and cloying that a man wouldn’t feel welcome. You’ve hit just the right feminine/masculine balance.

    1. Oh thank you Merlyn!!! I’m so glad you think so! I really wanted this to be a space both my husband and I could feel comfortable in! It’s definitely a relaxing space for us both!

  21. Absolutely stunning!! I love the dressers and side table, beautiful! Your posts blow me away, I hope that when we move our house looks half as good as yours 🙂

    Hope all is well!!

    xx-Doree

  22. This is absolutely stunning, Kristi! So much drool worthy goodness. Love it all! It looks so peaceful and beautiful. I love the lace peeking out of the curtains, such a sweet detailed touch! Its just so gorgeous.

Also a question. How do you like the iron bed? I LOVE the look of them, but am concerned about the comfort of sitting up in bed reading, as opposed to say a wooden bed. And ,we are currently looking for a new bed. Iron beds are in the running, because they’re just so pretty, but I do wonder…

Thanks for sharing, I hope you have many relaxing days now that the project is done! Blessings,
    Cheryl

    1. Thank you SO, SO much Cheryl! I’m really so happy with how everything has come together!

We’ve only had the bed for a few weeks, but I don’t have any complaints about the comfort of sitting up and reading – we just throw a couple of pillows behind us (as we always have) and make ourselves a little nest. I absolutely LOVE it!

      Thanks again!!!

    1. Thank you SO, SO much Bre! I’m absolutely thrilled with how it all came together! I still can’t believe we not only made it through, but that it turned out as perfectly as it did! Thanks again!!!

    1. Awwwww, thank you SO much Holly! I was actually surprised by how simple and quick it was to do! The stencil is pretty big, so that definitely helped speed things up. I’m thrilled with how it all came together! Thanks again!

  23. You got the ceiling done too!!! It really is a gorgeous room makeover, Kristi. Love the stenciled wall, he gorgeous DIY faux fireplace, those fabulous closet doors and hardware, the painted dresser and night tables, that fab light fixture…well I could go on and on. The room is totally magazine worthy Kristi (Style at Home are you watching?). Now sit back after Carson is tucked in bed and enjoy some downtime before the mad Christmas dash begins!

    1. You are just the sweetest Marie! Thank you SO, SO much! Somehow I knew you were going to love it as much as I do!!! You can bet I’ll be making a bit of time to kick back and enjoy it now. Thanks again my friend! xo

    1. Awwww, well thanks so much Heather! I’m really happy with how it all came together! And that stencilled wall wasn’t at all near the amount of work I thought it would be – luckily I had a pretty big stencil to work with! I think it took me about 5 hours total to do that entire 16′ wall! Thanks again!

  27. I just want to come and lay in your beautiful bed, right now!! So stunning, my Friend! So stunning! love every little sweet touch you put into this room! I am sure you will have sweet dreams in here!XXOO

  28. Kristi, I seriously LOVE everything that you did to your bedroom! It’s perfection! I love your style so much and you are one talented lady!! Amazing job!

  29. My word, what a project and how amazingly beautiful it turned out! I could have 6 months, ok, 6 years and not be able to work out all the fabulous details you did. I am so impressed with how you know what to put together to keep the feel you want – from the large pieces to the small details. The pillow on the bed with the candlewick stitched look is my fav since I used to enjoy doing that a long time ago. Thank you for sharing with all of us your incredible talent.

    1. Thank you SO much for you kind words Carrie! I’m so happy you love it as much as I do! It really helped me to keep my neutral farmhouse theme in mind each time I brought a new element into the room. I absolutely adore that pillow too and would love to be able to make something so pretty! Thanks again Carrie!

    1. Thank you so, so much Krista! I’m absolutely thrilled with how it all turned out and amazed that we were able to pull it all off in time! I’m just so happy to have such a lovely place to kick back at the end of the day now.

  30. Kristi, You’re bedroom is beautiful. All the hard work really paid off. I love the ceiling. Perfect for the farmhouse look. Thanks for sharing at Your Inpired Design Link Party #11.

    1. Thank you so, so much Carol! That ceiling is my very favourite part! I’m so happy that we were able to find a way to make it happen at the last minute!!!

  31. Oh. My. GOODNESS. Kristi!! This is GORGEOUS!!! I love every inch of your room! That stenciled wall is perfect, as is your bed and that beautiful light!! And the fireplace…. YES! You guys did such an amazing job, I can’t even imagine all the work that went into it. I’m in love!!

    1. Awwwww, thank you SO much Amanda!!! I’m so happy you love it as much as I do! It was a TON of work, especially to knock out in six weeks, but I couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out! And now I’m going to kick back, relax and enjoy it! xo

  32. Oh my goodness, Kristi, it’s so lovely! I totally want to come spend a night there, it looks like an amazing bed and breakfast! Great job doing it all in only 6 weeks!

  33. Yes, yes, and yes one more time! This is my kind of room – you have made it absolutely beautiful! I can’t decide my favorite part – the faux fireplace, gorgeous bed, or that amazing ceiling?! Okay, I love that ceiling!! Amazing work on your room – enjoy it!

    1. Thank you SO, SO much Jenny! I feel the very same way! I love it all so much that it’s impossible to choose favourites – though that ceiling and those closet doors have totally stolen my heart! Thanks again!!!

  34. Your bedroom is stunning! I am still completely smitten with that wall and the plank ceiling. You did an awesome job. I am just blown away by every detail.

  35. So much to love here. But, I think that chandelier is my favorite part. Thanks for sharing on the #HomeMattersParty . I hope you will join us again next week.

  36. What a lovely room. I really like the white on white color scheme, especially the bedding. And that dresser – one of these days I’m going to find a great curved front dresser to refinish! I was just having a conversation with my mom yesterday about “jewelry as art” – she is in the process of redoing her room/closet and currently has ALL of her necklaces on display hanging from a series of coat type racks around the room and I’ve been trying to convince her that it’s too much and she will enjoy it more if she were to just display a few at a time and change them out once in a while. I’m going to have to show her the photo of your display, for sure.

I am co-hosting the #HomeMattersParty link party this month and would love to have you stop by for a visit. The current party is open through Monday night. http://alaynascreations.co/2015/11/13/home-matters-linky-party-63/

    1. Thank you SO, SO much Alayna! I’m so happy you love it all! I think you’re absolutely right, a pretty jewelry display featuring only your favourites has much more of a pleasing visual impact. I actually just finished a decluttering series a few weeks ago and absolutely learned the truth behind “less is more”. Thanks for the link party invite, I’m all linked up 🙂

  37. Your room is absolutely beautiful- a real oasis. I am working on ours now and would love to know what paint you used on the dressers.

    Thank so much,
    Margaret

    1. Thank you SO, SO much Margaret! I’m so happy with how it all turned out! The paint on the dressers is Onyx by Benjamin Moore in a matte finish. Happy renovating!!!

  38. Kristi, your bedroom whispers ‘serene’…just so lovely. And I was going to ask about the paint on the dresser, but saw you just answered that question. I bet you pinch yourself each time you walk in to that lovely room. Well Done!!

    thanks for sharing…Lynn

    1. Awwwww, thank you so very much for your sweet words Lynn! I’m thrilled to hear that you love it as much as I do 🙂 And I’m happy you found your answer. Thanks again!

  39. Wow, so so gorgeous! I’ve tried to decide what element if my favorite, and I think I’ve settled on the stenciled wall. I think… I really love everything. Thank you SO MUCH for linking up to our first Inspired By You link party. We hope to see you every Sunday!

  40. You created such a lovely bedroom with a soft, soothing vibe. Everything really works together so well, and I love the delicate elements of contrast of black on white/neutrals. Now you can just sit back and enjoy (or sleep!)!

    1. Thank you SO, SO much for your sweet comment Linda! I’m so happy you love it as much as we do! I still can’t believe we pulled it off in time – it was a super busy (and sometimes stressful) six weeks, but boy was it worth it! Thanks again!

  41. You did an amazing job! It’s so soft and restful! I love all of it, but I think my favorite thing is that amazing jewelry tray on the wall! I would love to make one of those for the little dressing room we’re putting together in my farmhouse 🙂

    1. Thank you SO, SO much Meg! I’m thrilled that you love it! That jewelry hanger was actually an old printer tray with a few hooks screwed into it – it’s so simple, but I’ve loved it since first laying eyes on it a few years ago 🙂 I think it would work perfectly in a farmhouse dressing room (how lucky)! Thanks again!

  42. I love the farmhouse look! It is so peaceful and inviting! You did another fabulous job! Thanks for linking up to The Handmade Hangout! I’ll be featuring you on my blog when the new linky goes live today at 6 pm ET. I hope you’ll stop by and link up again!

  43. I love everything about this room, you did an amazing job. It is perfection. Sharing on IG now and we’ll be featuring it at the Pretty Preppy Party–thanks for linking up and nice work for the ORC! 🙂

    Amy

  44. Excellent job of updating and retaining the farmhouse authenticity in your bedroom. I epecially look the painted chest and dresser. I have been pinning photos for inspiration when it is time and I have time to paint our own furniture in our farmhouse. Happy Thanksgiving. Linda

    1. Thank you SO, SO much Linda! I’m so happy you love it as much as I do! I absolutely adore the new look of our dresser and bedside tables – that black turned out to be the perfect choice! Thanks again!

  45. Your room is gorgeous!!! Maybe it is in an older post, but can you tell me what color paints you used on the accent wall?

    1. Thank you SO much Jenn! I’m thrilled that you love it! The accent wall is done with cloud white and edgecomb gray, both from Benjamin Moore. Hope this helps 🙂

  46. This look is almost exactly what I’m working toward in my master bedroom. I can’t really pick just one element I like the most, everything works so well together. Really beautiful. I am having a hard time finding beside lighting and curtains. So I’ll check out the curtain fabric you chose. Thanks so much for sharing:)

  47. This room is amazing!! The stenciled wall looks gorgeous! Can you share the paint colors used for the stencil wall?? They go together so perfectly!! Excellent job!
