Easy ways to add some charm and character to create a beautiful farmhouse style hallway space.
Good morning friends!
If you’ve been following along with my Insta feed, you’ll know we’ve been very hard at work updating our hallway.
I know what you’re thinking …
How hard could it be to update one little hallway?
I know, because I had been thinking it too.
Even with these grand plans to transform the entire space, I thought we’d be looking at a couple day’s work. Three max.
Ha!
I really should know better by now.
Here we are, three whole weeks into our hallway renovation and finally, FINALLY, we’ve found the end of it!
I know, I’ve been whining and complaining for weeks now on Instagram about how exhausting it’s been removing the old fixtures, trim and hardware and then of course, painting over the peachy-pink walls & replacing said fixtures, trim, and hardware. At least I’m making up for it with some pretty pictures!
When you look at it, that list seems pretty short. I’m sure you can see how I’d think just one weekend would be more than enough. I can’t be the only one that so grossly underestimates how long things can take. Or the only one that still doesn’t seem to learn, time after time.
It may have taken ten times longer than I’d expected, but thankfully, all this hard, tedious, time-consuming work has been SO, totally worth it!
Really, see for yourself…
{sigh}
SO much better!
After a quick change in wall colour from hideous peach to my new fave Edgecomb Gray from Benjamin Moore, we switched out our boring old trim for some simple & classic farmhouse style trim and I couldn’t believe the way it completely transformed the space!
And really, we couldn’t change out the trim without matching up our old doors and of course, switching out that awful old hardware with these gorgeous knobs from Schlage!
Giving our old doors a quick makeover was such an easy way to really update the space!
Updating our trim and doors may have had the biggest impact on the space, but I think my very favourite part would have to be these pretty planked ceilings…
And of course these stunning schoolhouse lights from Barn Light Electric!!! Y’all have been gushing over them on Instagram for weeks now, and with good reason … there really couldn’t be a more perfect light out there to give us that vintage farmhouse feel we were after!
The last step was updating our ancient thermostat with this brilliant new model, which was super easy to install, but of course took me waaaaay longer than it should have (be sure your furnace cover is on tightly!).
Now, it may not have farmhouse charm, but what it lacks in old and rustic, it makes up for in shiny and smart (yes, I said smart – this thing actually has the ability to learn!).
As it always seems to be, decorating our beautiful new space was the really fun part…
I started with these simple DIY photo hangers. They make changing out photos a breeze!
I’ve always wanted my own giant chalkboard (find the full tutorial to build your own here).
And of course, a few other lovely accessories thanks to Wayfair.ca (YES! They’re finally in Canada friends!!!)…
I couldn’t be happier with our new farmhouse style hallway space (even if it did take ten times longer than I’d expected, literally)!
We’ve really come such a long way…

Cyndi Blackwell says
We moved into our “farmhouse” retirement home last year. The public areas of our home are definitely the “farmhouse” style: unfinished beadboard 9 ft ceilings, beadboard wainscoting to 4 ft level, simple trim work similar to yours. But the thing that screams farmhouse to me are those six paneled doors painted black. Folks asked me if I really wanted to do that; they make such a statement by blending in with all the farmhouse antiques. People say they feel so at home when they come over!
Kristi says
It sounds like an absolute dream Cyndi!!! And I bet the black doors are amazing!!!
Jenny @ Refresh Living says
Your hallway is absolutely gorgeous! Even though you expected it to take a shorter amount of time – 3 weeks is still impressive. Pinning for sure!
Kristi says
Thanks Jenny!!! It felt like an eternity after budgeting so little time for it, ha! What was I thinking?! At least I love the end result! 😉

It looks gorgeous! I recently made over our hallway, too and it’s STILL a work in progress. Glad I’m not the only one who (grossly!) underestimates how long a project will take! lol Lovely job.
Kristi says
Well that definitely makes me feel a bit better about things! 😉 Thank you SO, SO much Sue!!!
Sherry says

lollyjane says
This is amazing, that ceiling…oooh la lah!!
Kristi says
You gals are the sweetest! Thank you SO much!!!
kyleharrington says
This is amazing! Are you willing to share what you did for your ceiling trim? My husband and I are in the midst of our own farmhouse renovation, and I’m just in love with what you did! I’m not drawn toward traditional crown, and i think something similar would be perfect. Just beautiful!
Kristi says
Thank you so much! I’m thrilled that you love it! We just ran plain 1×3 rectangular trim along the top of our walls to meet the ceiling. It definitely gives a bit of added detail without all the fuss of traditional crown moulding. Thanks again!
Tony Baker says
I’m building a new house and have not installed the 8ft doors just yet. Should I install them before attempting to install hallway and room trims for this wonderful farmhouse trim look.
Kristi says
Hmmmm, I’m not sure it will matter either way, but I would probably make sure at least the hinges are there and ready before you install the trim work.
Ross Thomas says
Hi, Kristi!
What size board did you use for the ceiling trim? Thank you!
Kristi says
We used a primed 1×3 board. Thanks Ross!

Awwwww, yes it’s a ton of work, but SO rewarding once you start seeing those changes take shape!
